londonuk Posted February 28, 2007 Share #1 Posted February 28, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Have decided to not get the M8. Instead, I am going to trade my 90mm f2 and M2 and pentax spotmeter and go for an M6 and 28mm 2.8 lens. The other purchase at this second hand dealer in London is a Nikon coolscan 4000. Which I need for scanning the M6 films. Can anyone qualify the scanner. I am on Mac G5 (not Intel) does it work ok with OX Tiger ? Advide very much appreciated ! mym6is12 Posted February 28, 2007 Share #2 Posted February 28, 2007 Have decided to not get the M8... Nikon coolscan 4000...Which I need for scanning the M6 films. Can anyone qualify the scanner. I am on Mac G5 (not Intel) does it work ok with OX Tiger ?! ( Also no intention of getting a M8 as it currently stands ) I've had one for a good few years without problems - used it with a Mac cube and 12"PB under all OSX 10.0 ... 10.4.8. Normally use Vuescan, but the Nikon software also works fine. Seems very sharp, not quite as good as an optical print but, close. Far far better than a flatbed. Full Frame on Fuji NPH ( taken with a '0' series ) 100% Crop:
londonuk Posted February 28, 2007 Author Share #3 Posted February 28, 2007 Thank you Donald, Too many issues with the M8 and as my job is photography (soon to be videography, long story) I'm bored with digital and losing the tangability of film. I'll go down the coolscan route with confidence.
nrj Posted February 28, 2007 Share #4 Posted February 28, 2007 you could try a Minolta Multipro too. I had both and kept the Multi. On 35mm it seemed to give a bit more resolution visible in the scans (4800 vs 4000). That said the Nikon was a fine scanner
Jean-Michel Komarnicki Posted February 28, 2007 Share #5 Posted February 28, 2007 I use a Nikon 5000ED, with a G4. Mostly with Vuescan. I get excellent results with new and old transparencies(including Kodachome), colour negs and traditional b&w negs. My cost was just Canadian $1,300 for a new machine. I now only rarely need to get a drum scan for the work I do; for most purposes the Nikon scans are way more than just OK. I did look at buying a used scanner, but the cost savings just did not warrant gettng an older and much slower machine. Jean-Michel
williesheldon Posted March 2, 2007 Share #6 Posted March 2, 2007 I only have the Nikon Cool Scan 5 and it works fine for my needs. The 4000 goes faster though. And running it on MAC OS 10 is no problem. I do this with a 14 inch I book 1.4 ghz processor. I then do the alterations on my desk top.
