3 months ago I purchased a secondhand M8 with 1100 actuations and firmware 2.004.

Last week with about 3000 actuations completed it totally failed during use,The camera was suddenly compIetely dead, and has now been returned to Solms under warranty.

Given that I have an electronic Canon A1 which I purchased new in 1983 and, apart from the usual shutter lubrication maintenance, has never needed attention, and, like most other people have purchased modestly priced digital cameras, and never had a problem with any of them, have I been unlucky or am I justified in feeling this is not good enough from Leica.

Luckily I kept faith with my M6 body and resisted the temptation to trade it in, so my leica lenses are not entirely redundant.

I recently bought a used M8 (with store warranty) and feel your pain .

Having said that I bought a new Fuji X100 after Xmas and it failed within a month.

Now Fuji (being rather closer to me than Solms) fixed it perhaps quicker than some, but still.

Leica are a quality product and tbh you often hear more woes than yays online so would imagine its just one of those things :)

I had some initial problems with my M8, but it has been reliable for a long while.

 

Seems to me that Leica learned a lot from the camera.

 

Remember, when you pay for a repair, Leica brings it up to current standard. That is, they'll automatically replace components that were changed in production before the M8 was discontinued. You'll basically have a late-model M8 that in my experience has proven to be trouble-free.

 

When you see the estimate, let us know what parts are being changed out.

Thanks for the information Howard,I look forward to receiving it back and will let you know what the problem was.

Myiu the warranty is a 6 month one offered by the dealer Ffordes of Inverness Scotland ,who I can recommend, on all second hand equipment..

John, Welcome to the forum! That is bad luck and unusual. Be patient; your Leica M8 will return in good health.

 

The fact that you had a warranty suggests you bought it from a dealer. A warranty brings peace of mind. I have recently bought an old 135mm lens from a dealer and was agreeably surprised that it came with a 12 months warranty. The dealer clearly has faith in Leica and also faith in the goods he sells; which I why I am always happy to trade with him. In this case it was a mint item, boxed like new and from its pristine appearance and functionality, it could easily have come direct from Wetzlar where it was made 39 years ago. But it didn't. It had been in a previous owner's tender loving care! And I am now an appreciative owner. :)
