I've read pp140-143 of the manual until my eyes hurt, and I still don't really understand.

Please would someone help? My thanks in anticipation.

1) p140 says "..a metering flash is triggered immediately before..."

2) but I thought there was a pre-flash only with red-eye modes?

3) perhaps "metering flash" and "pre-flash" are different ?

4) "automatic" and "manual" modes; are these the same as "normal" and "fill" ?

5) p143, pic B, looks fine to me. Use end-synch all the time ?

PS. The camera is great, it's just the manual I find confusing. Smashing photographs. Bounce flash is a wonderful help on occasion. But not convinced I'm using it properly. Also, and this might be of interest to someone, I'm an old man with fingers deformed by arthritis, yet I can still operate the D2 though a smaller camera might be impossible. Autofocus and autometering are both very helpful. So the D2 has replaced two Rolleis that I've had for 52yrs and 35yrs. It had to be good to do that.

I too read the Digilux manual, flash pages over and over again "until my eyes hurt".

To be honest I just open the flash with mine and fire but... As I understand it, the metering flash is what is uses to determine the exposure. When I tried it, it was almost imperceptible. The pre flash however which is supposed to reduce the effects of red eye is quite noticeable and is almost stroboscopic! It closes down the eyes pupils so the camera and its flash do not illuminate one's retina.

In terms of manual v automatic, automatic is when the Digilux decides when it comes on the manual is more like a forced flash, which can be used for fill in as you say

I read the bit about flash synch over and over again. As far as I can make out from the two pictures, in A the camera has already began to make its exposure when the flash fires hence the light trails are in front of the bike. In B the flash is slightly delayed, so the same flash trails are now behind the bike which has now been illuminated by the delayed flash. A trick of the light I suppose.

I'm not sure what would happen if you had a delayed flash all the time, but I suppose you wouldn't get quite what you saw when you fired the shutter.

Hope that helps !

PS I read what you said the Rollei. I have a Rolleicord VA, which I've had since I was a student in 1974, its 6x6 colour slides are tremendous. When I dig them out I'm still impressed

Cheers Philip

Thank you, Philip. It's good to know I'm not the only one who finds the Manual incomprehensible. I think I shall stick to "manual" and "2nd curtain (what a ridiculous name)". For my own interest I have resolved to make 20x16 prints from the same pic taken with Rollei T, and with Rollei 35SE, and with Leica Digilux 2. Hope no one jumps up to tell me they are three very different cameras. I know that. I'm just curious to see how they compare. Best wishes to you.
