Several pictures to underline a technical discussion

There is an ongoing discussion about E6 slide film scanning much better than C41. Although I fully agree with this, I also find, that the most recent C41 films scan much more easily.

To underline this point, I have taken some images and scanned them, using a Quato 5000 (Plustek 7500 with Mac driver) film scanner and Siverfast 6.6.2r5. Silverfast was used in "auto-pilot", the TIF-scans were converted to JPG using Adobe Lightroom 3. The only manipulations I did were rotations.

All these images are not perfect, the point I'm trying to make is, that, using a film scanner and software combination, which costs below 300 EUR, it is possible to get results, which do not take much more effort to give a pleasing result - at least to my taste.

Two pictures scanning Fuji H400. The first image is at daylight, any residues of the orange colour mask should be easily visible in this image. The second one has mainly artificial light sources, some of them fluoroscent, some of them using filament sources. Both images need a colour balance and some more contrast, to my taste.

I couldn't find a full daylight image on Portra 800, the first picture is the closest balance to daylight I could find. The second one was chosen for the mixture of light sources.

I wouldn't do much changes on either picture.

Portra 400 - the first image was taken under daylight conditions, the second one using mixed light. The restaurant had wooden sun blinds, which gave a very nice colour. I find the film captured it very well.

I didn't have a proper setting for Portra 400 in Silverfast, so I used the setting for the older Portra 400VC.

It's probably no surprise I have only daylight images on Portra 160. Both images need slight adjustments, to my taste.

Settings for the older Portra 160VC were used.

Thank you for your interest
