garysandiego Posted February 27, 2007 Share #1 Posted February 27, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I just bought my first Leica product, a CM with cognac body. I ran one roll of cheap film through it (it was the only film I had and I was eager) and am quite impressed with the results. Looking forward to a roll of Portra NC. I have not noticed any of the problems reported with the apature or focus switches being too easy to bump out of position. I have always wanted to get something Leica, but my visual acquity is so poor that manual focusing is a hit and miss affair with me. Been otherwise using a Nikon F6, but that is a lot to carry on a weekend family excursion. The Nikon leads me to a question: is there any way for the CM to leave the film leader out after rewind? The F6 has that capability, and it is so handy for switching films with different ISOs. Any other Leicaphiles in San Diego?

abrewer Posted February 27, 2007 Share #2 Posted February 27, 2007 Hi Gary! Welcome to the Forum! I'm not that familiar with the CM, though I do have its predecessor the MiniZoom here on my desk in front of me. Does the CM have the same motor-rewind as my MiniZoom? If that's the case I doubt you can stop it short of full rewind. Ray Harms on this Forum has a CM, and is really good about sharing his knowledge of what it can do as well as his pictures. I'm hoping he'll chime in here, or you can PM him. Thanks. Allan
harmsr Posted February 27, 2007 Share #3 Posted February 27, 2007 Gary, I am not aware of any setting on the CM which will leave the leader exposed. Both the automatic rewind at end of film and pressing the buttom to rewind when you want to, leave the leader inside the cassette. Sorry. Ray P.S.: Welcome to the forum, and I'm sure that you will enjoy the CM. For a small P&S, the lens is unbelievable.
garysandiego Posted February 27, 2007 Author Share #4 Posted February 27, 2007 Yes, Allan, the CM does have a motor rewind. And thanks, Ray, for the information. I guess I just have to use up the roll before I switch. (I suppose that is not such a bad thing!) Any other free advice would be appreciated. wda Posted February 28, 2007 Share #5 Posted February 28, 2007 Yes, Allan, the CM does have a motor rewind. And thanks, Ray, for the information. Gary Gary, I am a staunch member of the CM Fan Club and have used it extensively for travel photography. My only cautionary note is to get into the habit of rolling your right index finger around the manual focus wheel to ensure it is left on AF (when you want AF!) before pressing the shutter release button. All too easily you can get out of focus pictures because the wheel has been moved. It needs a stiffer spring to hold it in position. It is a great camera otherwise. garysandiego Posted February 28, 2007 Author Share #6 Posted February 28, 2007 Thanks, David. So far the focus wheel on my camera has been stiff. Does the focus wheel become more loose as time goes by? I assume my camera is a recently manfactured model, as it has the cognac body. Is it possible Leica had stiffened the wheel later in the production run? Thanks, Gary
gberger Posted March 1, 2007 Share #7 Posted March 1, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Gary - I believe that you will appreciate the diopter correction capability. My spouse has around a minus one and I have a plus one - - but we can both use the CM. Nice!
PhotoArchival Posted March 1, 2007 Share #8 Posted March 1, 2007 Hi Gary! Welcome to the forum and congrats on the new CM. I love it and have shot most of my photo's to date with the camera. In fact it is the only camera I have with me at all times. The focus ring is never much of a problem for me and I can usually tell if it's out of AF from inside the viewfinder info (if you see any one of these arrows (>) (<) it means you knocked the AF out. But if you see a solid red circle, your good to press the shutter. Sorry if you already know this! Amado
davephoto Posted March 1, 2007 Share #9 Posted March 1, 2007 welcome gary! though not a CM owner, i'm a full card carrying minilux fan and think the world of the 40mm summarit attached to these titanium wonders. look forward to seeing some of your photos, gary. bcorton Posted March 1, 2007 Share #10 Posted March 1, 2007 Congratulations on the CM. If you want to switch film in mid roll, why don't you just rewind it and then use one of those devices that retrieve the film leader out of the cassette. I have one, and they only cost about $7 or $8 if I'm not mistaken. It's not a bad accessory to have in your kit anyway. All good things, Brent

garysandiego Posted March 1, 2007 Author Share #12 Posted March 1, 2007 Thanks all. I had no idea how helpful evereyone hwere would be! And thanks, Brent, for the film-leader-retreival-thingy advice. I did not know those things existed. Gary
rjans Posted March 2, 2007 Share #13 Posted March 2, 2007 Gary, welcome to the the forum and congrats with your CM, Cognac version. I have one myself. I love it. It's the best small camera I ever bought and it is certainly an improvement over the Minilux that I now use as back up. Like the Minilux, the rewinding is fully automatic and I have not been able to stop before the film goes into the cartridge. Best
