Initial impressions of the Bessa R2M

I was out of town when the R2M arrived so I only got to see it last Friday when I returned to home base. It was immediately pressed into service as a b/u camera to my M7 for some people photography I did last Saturday. The R2M spent the day looking at the world through a 75mm Summicron: I love the single frame this camera gives me for this focal length! I immediately added a small Softie so my finger would have an easier time in finding the shutter button. I also removed and discarded the noisy metals rings that ship on the camera. I quickly added the so-called Voigtlander delux strap which I like much better because it is softer, more flexible and definitely quieter.

 

I ddn’t want to shoot with the 50mm Heliar that also arrived with the new body until I got more used to its collapsible feature. I could see half the roil coming back out of focus because I didn’t fully deploy the lens. (I realize it is something of a “retro” commemorative piece and perhaps not meant for heavy use.)

 

Minor gripes: lack of a motor drive (yes, I know they have alever drive accessory); hard to read exposure number (compared to any M-body Leica); black paint job (Leica paint is better!). Overall, Cosina is to be applauded for their R2M.

 

Yes, the shutter is noisier than any Leica M. Get over it. This R2M may well be my last new film camera. My position order is already in for the M8.

I have the R2A and have found it a very similar experience to yours. The shutter noise is quite a surprise when you first hear it though. Its much louder than one might expect. Not a problem for street shooting, but quite obvious if trying to capture a quite moment at a party or wedding...

That said, I think its a great camera and a great way to get into RFs...
