prk60091 Posted February 14, 2012 Share #1 Â Posted February 14, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) I am thinking about purchasing the Leica VF- I have in the past "dismissed the usage" of the VF I now "know" the X1 well enough to not need the histogram for every image. Â I use the Thumbs-up and I wonder if the Thumbs-up in anyway interfers or limits the VF? (I plan on purchasing the Leica VF) I have read virtually every thread in this forum on the X1 VF and I am convinced the Leica VF is the one I want- not the Voightlander version- Â or does using the VF obviate the need for the Thumbs-up?? Â Thanks in advance
Advertisement Posted February 14, 2012 Posted February 14, 2012 Hi prk60091, Take a look here Leica VF and Thumbs-up. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
wda Posted February 14, 2012 Share #2 Â Posted February 14, 2012 I can't help you directly, but I do find the Leica hand-grip indispensable. It is not too bulky and gives great reassurance when shooting.
spylaw4 Posted February 15, 2012 Share #3 Â Posted February 15, 2012 I have both fitted - IMO the VF is almost essential, and I like the feel/grip with the Thumbs-up, although ideally a slightly longer shaft on the TU would suit my hand better. I don't use the handgrip, but then I"ve an A&A half-case which has a grip "bump". YMMV - as always!
pvak Posted March 4, 2012 Share #4 Â Posted March 4, 2012 With the Thumbs-up attached your VF will sit a bit higher on the camera because it fits on top of the Thumbs-up hot shoe attachment. This will cause a slightly greater parallax error with respect to what the lens captures. May I ask your reasons for preferring the Leica VF over the Voigtlander? The Voigtlander is all metal (not plastic), brilliant optics, brighter bright-lines, and is half the price of the Leica. It is smaller and because it is round, fits the aesthetics of the camera better (IMHO). Both have the same eye relief (no problem with glasses - I wear them) but the Voigtlander is more forgiving if your eye is slightly off the centre axis of the ocular lens. The Leica VF needs your eye to be centred otherwise you won't see the full frame. I also find that it being 35mm instead of 36 (like the lens) the Voigtlander helps with parallax compensation, as I capture a bigger image than what I see in the viewfinder. stratherb Posted March 4, 2012 Share #5  Posted March 4, 2012 The Thumbie  Very reasonably priced. Well built and designed. Excellent ergonomics ( Follows the angle of the thumb) Leaves the hot shoe free. Small and elegant.  Cannot be temporarily removed Comes only in black  mailto:barnet@globalnet.co.uk  For the record: those that cannot be temporarily removed kan easily be taken off without damage to the camera! I had an email exchange with the maker last year and he indicated he did not have a x1 available to model and test a thumbie with.
prk60091 Posted March 5, 2012 Author Share #7  Posted March 5, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) I am here is the answer from Steve  >>Hello Paul  It isn't available for the X1. But by that I mean I have always said it doesn't fit the X1 and there is no X1 version of the Thumbie. But I don't have an X1 to measure it against so I'm not sure. If there is a 10mm space between the top edge of the top plate and the control wheel, and 45mm from the end of the body to the LCD, AND the curve of the body matches radius of the larger M type body, then it should fit. But I then don't know if it would obstruct the use of the control wheel.  So, no is the official answer, but if you measure up and it looks ballpark and wanted to try I would be happy to send you one on a sale or return basis.  best regards Steve
