Leica 24mm 3.8 vs Zeiss 25mm 2.8

Ok, then forget about the 46mm filter size, but I tried the manual coding with a pencil and it never really worked for me. Either the camera detected nothing or even the wrong lens.

I've used the match Coder Kit with the supplied pen. But it never worked (with my lens/camera). Don't know why. But thanks for the info.

Boris, your issue was quite common in the past.

If you still need to make it work, by the way, you should try one of these:

-Use a "SHARPIE" pencil (quite common to find)

-Use a black paint (one of those usually available at any hobby shop)

In few words, since the 6bit reader (scanner) that is integrated in the M9/M8 is sensitive to IR, the wrong pencil, or paint (with reddish pigments) may foul the reader itself.

Cheers,

Oh no, I decided I need a wide angle lens, and 24mm would be most practical as it´s not too close to my 35 as a 28 would be.

Now I went to my local store where they have a used Zeiss Biogon 25 for 800€ (+100€ for the hood) and of course the Elmar which is 2000€ (hood included).

I handled them both and the Zeiss had some play with focusing but was otherwise perfect. The Leica, well, was just perfection. Optically I don´t think I could distinguish between the two.

I fear I have many sleepless nights ahead...:(

Thanks Maurizio, at the moment all my lenses are coded, but I'm thinking about buying the VC12mm or the ZM15 in the future. Then I will have the problem with the coding again and will try some different paint. In the past I just used the pencil that was supplied with the coder kit. I've read about the "Sharpie" pencils, but was not able to find them in Germany.

Have had got my 24mm Elmar - ohh what great lens, both optically and build quality is top notch.

The size I am also happy with - light and handy, and look forward to getting out of the house and take some landscape photos.

Despite the maximum aperture of f/3.8, I think I can easily enjoy this lens indoors.

Ps. Have incidentally tried a ZEISS ZM BIOGON 25 MM 2.8 for a short time - Leica works so much better, and especially build quality is better.

Oh well, you just made my life a lot harder.

Seems I have to find the 2k€ to fund it now. :)

  • 3 years later...

I've recently got the Elmar 24/3.8 and used with Snapshot program file of M9, it makes me very impressive, more happier than the other reputation leica lens that I have, I really feel love it as same as my 35 FLE.
