Well, it's on the way to NJ and then Solms. What should I expect next? Do I get an acknowledgement from Leica USA or do I have to wait for it to get to Solms? Who will give me the repair/upgrade tracking number?

Missing my M8 already, did not expect to be so hard to return to film after just 3months with the M8. I would have procrastinated about sending it in much longer if it had not broken down.

Good Question

I sent mine the end of January and received a slip from NJ Feb 8th. But still no word from Solms. Called NJ and was told they haven't received a confirmation from Germany yet so they can not tell me anything. It lloks like the original 4 weeks may be 8 weeks.

Missing the little black box. :(

I received a confirmation from Solms but I guess that will take more time to get to you than the cam.

Your parcel tracking number should come from NJ. In order to track the current "repair" status, you won't need the order number, just your serial number of the cam.

For the US folks, this is a bit more drawn out process than for folks in Europe.

Shipping to Leica NJ, where they will enter it into their system and issue a tracking number. That number is only for the US side of things. They then ship to Solms, usually on a Wednesday or Thursday. Once in Solms, it must be entered into their system and placed in the queue, where the repairs and such take about 10 days. Once it has been logged into the system in Solms, you can track progress using the Service Tracking section from the Leica site. However, you will enter the camera serial number rather than the NJ tracking number. Whenever the tracking message says "Repairs Completed", it will then be sent back to NJ (about once a week shipping), goes through customs, has to be entered back into the NJ tracking system and then it is shipped back to you via two-day shipping. You will be able to track that shipping. Rather complicated way to go, but it seems to work.

Leica NJ was quoting 4 weeks turnaround, but there have been some back-ups or flu or something going on last month in Solms, so things got behind about 2-3 weeks from what I can tell. (I shipped mine to NJ on 22 Jan, and it did not start the "repair" part in Germany until 19 February, so something was held up quite a while.)

You will also recieve a paper copy of the repair plans from NJ a few days after they recieve it and determine what needs to be done. (Some folks are needing more than just the recall repair, or have sent lenses for coding, etc., and those require separate treatments on differing timetables.)

Not sure if all that is clear, but I am more than too anxious to get mine back already!

I am sorry to inform you that it is a very unpleasant experience. I have been suffering withdrawal. On the bright side, my 5D is happy, it was getting lonely from non-use.

I don't have my M8 back yet, but it is on its way back to the US now.

Did mine over Christmas from the Left Coast > NJ > Solms > NJ > back home. (I knew that Solms shut down between the holidays but I decided to send the camera anyway just to get it over with.)

Total time my M8 was gone: six weeks.

It's worked perfectly since in returned in mid-January. Like the rest of us in the USA, still waiting for my two Leica-promised filters.

Firmware 1.10 release? Hey, it'll be there when it's done. I have no beef with 1.09 but plenty of hopes and not a few wishes for 1.10.
