tgray Posted February 1, 2012 Share #1 Â Posted February 1, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Anyone in the Philadelphia area have a 21 Summilux? I'm thinking of getting one, but I'm not putting down that kind of money without holding one and trying it out first. Of course, no stores have any lenses in stock, so I can't do that either. I know I can rent one from lensrentals.com, but I'd kind of like to avoid the $300-400 rental price if I can. Though I know it's a different lens, a 24 Summilux would probably be ok too - I just want to get a sense on viewfinder blockage, lens handling, and focussing. Â Barring the above, does anyone have any ideas where I could try one out in the area? Â Greatly appreciated if anyone can help out. I'll buy coffee or beer in return And if your interested in trying out any of my lenses, I'll of course bring them along.

StephenPatterson Posted February 1, 2012 Share #2 Â Posted February 1, 2012 Another option is to sign up for a Leica Akademie class. I attended the one day "M9 Experience" in San Francisco last year and shot with a 21 Summilux all day. After the class you receive a voucher for almost the entire cost of the class, which can be used to purchase any Leica M lens or body. The voucher is good for about a year (I think Leica realizes that waiting lists are long). Â I didn't buy the 21 Summilux, but instead went for the less expensive 21/3.4 Super Elmar M, however the Summilux is a fantastic lens. IMHO the lens is not overly large and viewfinder blockage was not an issue for me. Â Good luck!!!
tgray Posted February 1, 2012 Author Share #3 Â Posted February 1, 2012 Good idea. Unfortunately the closest ones are in DC or NYC, which means after gas, train tickets, and hotel costs, I might as well just rent one. Â I have thought about the 21/3.4. Looks like a great lens. If I didn't already have the Zeiss 21/4.5, I'd probably go for that one.
StephenPatterson Posted February 1, 2012 Share #4 Â Posted February 1, 2012 I'm a big fan of the Leica Akademie classes, as you can try everything in the lineup (including the Noctilux). Yes, the travel can be inconvenient, but if you get the chance I think you would really enjoy the experience. Â I had the Zeiss 21/2.8 before buying the Leica 21/3.4. When I sold the Zeiss I recovered nearly my entire purchase price. Not bad for a used lens.
