Nikon Speedlights with M9

All flashes that mount properly in the camera shoe, and have an A mode (for 'external automatic') can be used with a M9. You will have to:

• Set the ISO you are using on the flash, or see that the camera and the flash are set to identical ISOs;

• Set the same aperture with the lens and the flash (flash aperture selection may be limited);

Many current 'system' or dedicated flashes work only in TTL mode, however. These are bad bets because if they ignite at all, they produce just one big full power blast, without any exposure control. This is generally what 'manual' means, i.e. you use a test flash and either a flashmeter or the exposure histogram (with a test exposure) to calibrate your exposure, by adjusting the aperture and/or the camera ISO.

Thanks for the info. I am considering getting an M9 and 35mm lens. As part of the decision, I was hoping to use my existing speedlights, and it sounds like you can.

Using Pocketwizards also seem to be viable. Mounting a SB-900 on top of an M9 would seem top heavy, but mounting a Pocketwizard would appear to be more balanced.

Top-heaviness is less a problem than it would seem. With the SF54, the camera wants to hang around your neck with the flash falling downward & the lens pointing at your chest. But if you have a lens hood &/or filter, it really doesn't matter. It balances pretty well when you raise it to shoot.
