paul6001 Posted January 24, 2012 Share #1 Posted January 24, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) I'm not trying to start the latest battle of the 100 Years War, I'm just curious. We all kow that the X1 is not the fastest car in the garage. So when I want speed, I switch to manual. Shooting manual, I can catch my kid in mid-air, before he splashes into the pool. I can get a bike racer pulling out of the pack and starting a sprint for the finish. My question is this: Could the X100 do that on auto? The S90? The D300? Based on no experience whatsoever, I'm sceptical. So why should I care if my X1 is a little slower, if the method I employ is the same either way? My second post! Oh no, I'm turning into a Leica weenie!

Oh no, I'm turning into a Leica weenie! Now the reality is that the X1 is neither in the top quartile of photographic tools for AF nor for MF. Its MF implementation is actually pretty awkward and compared to 2012 technological standards the AF among the slowest, if not the slowest, of the large sensor compact camera group (Panasonic & Olympus mft, Sony NEX, Samsung NX, Fuji X100, Ricoh GXR, Nikon N1, Sigma DP1/2x). Except for compactness, bold price sticker and looks, the X1 does not stand out of the group any longer.
Paul J Posted January 24, 2012 Share #3 Posted January 24, 2012 I agree. Firstly, I've totally become a Leica Weenie as you say - Just about to buy an M9 kit now! Secondly, I have a new X1 and I'm astounded by it's quality. I've just started using it on manual focus and just love it. That combined with the 4 frame burst and it's pretty unbeatable. I don't even think the AF is all that bad. Slow, yes. But not unusable, which you would think it is judging by some of the negative reviews. I actually think the MF implementation is genius. Kinda like the RF patch in an M camera...kinda...sorta.... At first it confused me but now I've spent a couple days using it I think it's AMAZING. And very responsive. I could care less what people think about it. To me it's close to perfect and I love it. I look forward to seeing how they develop this camera over it's future generations. paul6001 Posted January 27, 2012 Author Share #4 Posted January 27, 2012 Such hostility from Ecaton! But he certainly set me straight. Here, I was, happily shooting along. Now I find out that my X1 is not in the top "quartile" in terms of MF "implementation." (Uh, the way it works, right?) No source given for this ranking, but given the air of unqestionable authority that exudes from Ecaton, I can only believe that a Higher Power has taken the time to rank cameras. His is the Power and the Glory and F-stop. A few years ago, when I read Anthony Lane's piece on Leica, I didn't know he meant when he wrote that "to non-photgraphers, Leica, more than any other manufacturer, is a legend with a hint of scam: suckers paying through the nose for a name..." Since I bought the X1, I've learned. Lane blames Leica-hatred on anger at a "doomed attempt to crank up the credibilty of a picture." I think that it's something else. No one really questions whether the X1 is a good camera or not. Some just think it costs too much, that it's not worth the price. I naively thought that paying too much was just a question of how much I have left in my checking account, and whether I can afford tickets to the new Richard III that is getting the rave reviews. But to others, paying too much is a moral issue. Paying too much means transgressing the very ethos of this consumer society, a society where shopping is the essential, and the blessed, activity. Same size sensor, smaller or just as small and faster. Any larger I would go all the way and use my killer do-it-all weather sealed dslr. What the heck. The X1 is older than your entire list, except for maybe one or two, yet it's image quality is not only comparable, it continues to exceed many if not most of them. When you combine that with the rest of the "stand out" attributes you list, the X1 remains a phenominal photographic tool.
phancj Posted January 28, 2012 Share #7 Posted January 28, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) It's simply amazing how the X1 still stands out after a full 2 years, a long time in digital terms. I cant find a suitable camera to exceed it at the moment (compact large sensor). Maybe the nex7, but the e-mount lenses besides the zeiss prime arent that great (to put it mildly) ,of course we can use leica lenses (hahahha) in which case we lose AF. Ricoh a little long in the tooth and bulky, same thing with loss of AF with leica lenses. The firmware upgrade allows for accurate and reliable zone focusing, if one has a good sense of distance (the green bar thingy is great). CJ
Portobello Posted February 3, 2012 Share #8 Posted February 3, 2012 "But out of limitations comes creativity." - Debbie Allen I have my Canon SLR and my X1... guess which one gets me my favorite shots... The X1 has taught me to anticipate... to plan ahead... to actually learn and memorize what aperture and shutter I need to get the exposure I want. It outputs more keepers than any camera I've owned. I would like a faster AF and Mechanical MF sure but I'm actually thankful for the X1s limitations because the only thing that counts is the result and the X1 gives me good results consistently. Sure my Canon SLR can snap 500 photos quickly but how many of those are actually good? I'm not saying the Canon is bad but the quick AF and it's quick shooting can make a photographer lazy. Here's a recent black and white set when I went on a walk around LA. I took 42 photos, these were my favorites. 2012-01 Los Angeles Hike - a set on Flickr
