Question???

Hi, Eric,

many years have passed since I photographed in Cuba, but these points come to mind:

First, high temperatures and high humidity are unfriendly to film and, in the long run, to lenses (fungus) and camera mechanics. Do avoid leather cases. Ventilate your gear as often as possible.

Second, we don't as yet know much about how the M8 behaves under these conditions. It seems reasonable to bring another backup camera. Another digital camera will probably be vulnerable on the same points as the M8, so there seems to be a case for an analog M in reserve! This of course brings up the matter of airport controls (I travellled before the Great Terrorist Scare, so I have no info there) and of film availability in Cuba, which is probably very spotty. I carried in heaps of Kodachrome!

Also, Cubans authorities can occasionally be a bit nervous about photographing aliens, especially outside the tourist spots. Let it be said that their reasons are considerably more convincing than those of los Yanquis. The Cubans themselves are nice people as long as you respect them; 'dignidad' is important as amongst all Hispanic people, and that I'm sorry is very difficult for Yanquis to understand; they have very little of it themselves.

Sorry about that, U.S. friends, but I call the shots as I see them. And some of my best friends *are* from the U.S.A., though perhaps not quite average ones.

For the rest, you will find the place sometimes infuriating and often fascinating. Give my regards to Old Habana.

Eric,

in the German Forum there are some few members who frequently visit Cuba especially for color shooting. They d it with 35mm and medium format cameras. I would suggest to ask again in the other forum in the columne "Leica Kundenforum" and you'll get a lot of useful hints (I hope)

PS: Leica is doing some guided trips to Cuba too.

Eric,

I have been to Cuba April 2006.

I used Ms with 21, 35 and 100mm and a Nikon F4 with 180mm. Films were B/W 100ASA, because there is so much light, that I would have had problems with my usual 400ASA and the 1/1000sec as shortest time on the Ms (I have learned this from Stefan Prager, smep, who was there several times before).

Regards

Oliver
