Unhappily the weather here in Minnesota has turned to complete s**t, with temps around 5-10° below zero (that -23° C for those in the more enlightened parts of the world.) Not much fun wandering around with a camera this week.  Same here in Maine. Below zero with 30-40mph winds. Kinda chilly. David
Advertisement Posted January 21, 2012 Posted January 21, 2012 Hi Deliberate1, Take a look here G.A.S. in complete remission. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
algrove Posted January 21, 2012 Share #22 Â Posted January 21, 2012 Once you use the asph, the little voice in you will tell to try the pre-asph, as it renders differently. An there you go again...........! And then there is the desire to go light and compact, which asks for this stellar Elmar 50 f2.8, which can be had for a bargain. And lastly, trying to master the focus shift beast, the ZM Sonnar 50mm, is something every advanced m-shooter owes himself. The Sonnar will reward the efforts with a unique rendering. An M shooter can't have too many 50mms:D. Â My gosh. Are you reading my mind and experience of late or what? Also my voices convince me I should just try the Mandler of this or that lens, and you know, glad I did.

Kinda chilly.David  Same here in Florida, we had to put on long sleeve shirts a couple of days this past week. The strongest (or those just arrived from the North) still kept their shorts on. I even saw women going out to food shop with down vests on!! Truly lousy weather!
StephenPatterson Posted January 21, 2012 Share #24 Â Posted January 21, 2012 G.A.S., like Malaria, can return at any moment. Â Still waiting for my 35 Summilux ASPH FLE. Until it arrives don't talk to me about "remission".

fWord Posted January 21, 2012 Share #26  Posted January 21, 2012 Wait a minute. Saying a 28mm Elmarit is different than a 28mm Cron is like saying, My 50mm Cron (Rigid) is different than My 50mm Elmarit, or My 50mm Noctilux, or My MATE.... I am doomed  Now when will I find a 50mm Summilux ASPH FLE? ARGH!!!  'Different' as in the difference in maximum aperture. Personally I think that a wide angle lens that has astounding performance at f/2 is something to be respected as it is to be appreciated. Perhaps I might find some time between work and my other chores (yeah right ) to put the 28 Cron through its paces (only got it recently, having moved on from a 35 Cron ASPH). But the time it's really going to shine would be during April when I get my cousin's pre-wedding photos done.  I could just imagine using this lens in the evening, wide open and standing at medium distance to get some environmental photos in the city, buildings in the background. That would just be downright awesome. Hope to get some really good ones (yeah right again), and some jaws will drop when it plays as a slideshow on the big screen during their wedding dinner. A lot cheaper than a Leica lens!

It's only a 1:30 minute flight from Houston!!!  Tomorrrow evening there's a traditional mexican wedding in the central plaza with thousands of "guests" anticipated, and I really wish I had a 35 Summilux for the event. Oh well, the 50 Summilux will just have to carry the burden!!!

swamiji Posted January 23, 2012 Share #31 Â Posted January 23, 2012 'Different' as in the difference in maximum aperture. Personally I think that a wide angle lens that has astounding performance at f/2 is something to be respected as it is to be appreciated. . Â Well, actually there is more difference than the aperture, for one they draw very differently, even when stopped down to the lowest common aperture, they are all quite different. Also there is a size difference... but that's just being practical. I found that there is enough difference between various lenses to have at hand, some overlapping focal lengths, some older and some newer. The only problem is G.A.S. Oh well, the 50 Summilux will just have to carry the burden!!!  Sounds fun. What would a 21/1.4 do at that event? I know you have a 21, but sounds like this a 0.95 to 1.4 event no matter the lens. Guess you'd have to be right on top of people with a 21/1.4 though.

I found that there is enough difference between various lenses to have at hand, some overlapping focal lengths, some older and some newer. The only problem is G.A.S. Â Well I've read about the differences in rendering between the Summicron and Elmarit ASPH, primarily commenting about the stronger contrast of the Elmarit. Since I haven't had both, I couldn't really comment. I'd like to think that lower contrast is better on a digital sensor since it preserves the highlights more readily. However, for a lower contrast people could source a CV 28/1.9 instead, although it is a very different animal altogether. Good value I think, but given the tests I've seen, the corners are a little soft, and visibly so even on the M8.

Jamie Roberts Posted January 24, 2012 Share #37 Â Posted January 24, 2012 Well, actually there is more difference than the aperture, for one they draw very differently, even when stopped down to the lowest common aperture, they are all quite different. Also there is a size difference... but that's just being practical. I found that there is enough difference between various lenses to have at hand, some overlapping focal lengths, some older and some newer. The only problem is G.A.S. Â While I generally agree (and have the 21, 35 and 50mm collection to prove it), I have to say I owned the Elmarit ASPH for only as long as I didn't have the 28 Summicron There's really nothing the Elmarit does that the Summicron doesn't do better, IMO, except perhaps in terms of absolute portability. Â In truth, the 28 Summicron is one of Leica's true gems. It's just low-contrast enough, though not soft by any means--when wide open to work very well for environmental portraits, and stopped down it retains its character and increases contrast. Â While I think the Elmarit ASPH is a fine 28mm by almost any measure, against the Summicron I had no problems parting with the Elmarit, which isn't usually the case with Leica lenses in the slightest. I have to admit my emotional attachment to them, and the they way they all work differently, makes it hard for me to rationalize what I own and shoot sometimes. Â But that 28 Summicron really is a very nice lens. It's the only lens I've sold and bought back to date...I missed it that much
