angeche Posted January 8, 2012 Share #1 Â Posted January 8, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) My telyt 400 was not enough so I got the Tely 560mm just before Christmas. I took some shots this week in a salty lagunae called Gallocanta, in Spain. Cranes should be in Africa, but warm winters of late (blame climate change!) mean they stay here. Â I have used the lens at full aperture (f6.8) and I have also used a Leica Extender (2x). I have noticed a limited DOF (maybe I should have increased the f?). The camera is a Pana GH2. Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â The bokeh in the last one is nice, I think! Â Any experience/comments on the lens used?

k-hawinkler Posted January 8, 2012 Share #2 Â Posted January 8, 2012 Hi Jose, Â Congratulations on your new lens. Nice shots. That's the lens I am still looking for. I got the 560/5.6 though. Â As you use an extender, may I assume you have the R-version of the lens? Â Thanks for an answer, best K-H.

k-hawinkler Posted January 8, 2012 Share #4  Posted January 8, 2012 Hi Jose,  Thanks for the info. I think you have an incredible setup here. If I understand this, you are using a 560/6.8 R-lens + 2x Extender + Panasonic GH2.  I believe the GH2 has a 4/3 sensor with a crop factor of 2x. So, putting it all together the effective angle of view of your system is equivalent to that of a 35 mm FF system with a focal length fl of a fl = 560 • 2 • 2 = 2240 mm. Shot wide open your resulting f-number is f/13.6. That's quite some reach!  I actually like your narrow DOF. It isolates beautifully the birds from the background, especially in your last picture. Wonderful!  Amazing! What ISO did you use? What shutter speed?  I would be interested to learn how far you can stop down, considering the birds are moving around. Also, does the GH2 give you focus confirmation?  Thanks again, best K-H.
angeche Posted January 8, 2012 Author Share #5  Posted January 8, 2012 The data is: 1. ISO 320, speed 1/2000 2 and 3. ISO 160, speed 1/400 4. ISO 160 and speed 1/640  And your calculations are right! The GH2 does not give any focus confirmation and focusing manually with such a set up is quite a bit of pain (mental note: bring a heavier tripod next time!).  I didn´t try to stop down given the relative low light conditions and the fast moving subjects. But that can be an experiment in the future....  Cheers  Jose
pauledell Posted January 9, 2012 Share #6 Â Posted January 9, 2012 Jose, Â Excellent results with this series. I can imagine how challenging these shots were. Â Paul
dkCambridgeshire Posted January 9, 2012 Share #7  Posted January 9, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) The lens is serving you well Jose. Look forward to seeing some more. You could try a smaller set aperture but as has already been stated, the effective aperture with a 2x convertor is already f13.6. If you try a set aperture of f8 it should be ok ie equivalent to f16 - but then you may not have a fast enough shutter speed.  Best wishes  dunk
