Olsen Posted March 8, 2012 Author Share #83 Posted March 8, 2012 We made a visit to the old capital of Malta: Mdina (sic). Derived from the Arabic word Medina that could mean: 'al-Madīnah al-Munawwarah' = “the radiant city”. Or 'madinat al-nabi' = "the city of the prophet." Still, Mdina's architecture is very typical for the the Christian part Mediterranean area. - That has got the inspiration from the 'medinas' of the muslim North Africa. Mdina is situated on a hill right in the middle of Malta surrounded by medieval walls. Today it is a very fashionable place to live. Inside the walls are several palaces that is homes to the rich and prominent. Welcome, dear visitor! Olsen Posted March 8, 2012 Author Share #89 Posted March 8, 2012 We got lost trying to find our ship. Valetta has two harbours. We were all frozen stiff when we finally got back. The Mediterranean is cold in January and February. Maintenance was continuously conducted during the voyage. Most of the deck crew, up to the chief mate was Philippians. Welcome, dear visitor! Olsen Posted March 8, 2012 Author Share #92 Posted March 8, 2012 We arrived at new harbours early in the morning. I was quick up on deck to catch this morning light at Port Said. Olsen Posted March 9, 2012 Author Share #93 Posted March 9, 2012 ....I'll promise you that this is the only picture of the pyramids I will show here. This is just to confirm that I have 'been there, done that..' Going there was the real experience. By bus from Port Said to Cairo's Giza. With armed guard in each bus, even a spare bus and a police car in the front and in the back of the procession. This was how tourists were protected while we were there. It seemed well too much. We met only very friendly people! From old men to children, they waved to us with smiles, all the way. All the Egyptians we spoke to was more than friendly. They were soon to tell us that we arrived to Egypt at special time in Egypt's history... Welcome, dear visitor! Olsen Posted March 9, 2012 Author Share #94 Posted March 9, 2012 Regardless of which direction I pointed my camera this beduin chieftain, 'grandpa', managed to maneuver his camel right in front of my lens. Olsen Posted March 9, 2012 Author Share #95 Posted March 9, 2012 I tried to photograph his grandson in secrecy, who had fallen asleep while looking after the horses while grandpa was doing his photo model act. But he heard me and shouted out: 'photograph me!' So, here is the young Ali Baba, for all to see 'on the internet', - which I promissed him. - 33% of Egypt's population is bellow 14 years old..... It cost me another 5 Euros.... Note the cap. It was still cold. I wore a thick skiing jacket that day. Welcome, dear visitor! Olsen Posted March 11, 2012 Author Share #97 Posted March 11, 2012 Far more interesting than the pyramides was Egypt itself, these days. Not the least Cairo. Olsen Posted March 11, 2012 Author Share #100 Posted March 11, 2012 The traffic jams of Cairo was once unique. No more. Just look up any capitol in Europe; it's the same. Or worse. To me, car traffic pollution wasn't even up to the choking level of Paris. Probably due to that most of the cars in Paris is diesel driven. Like elsewhere in Europe. Welcome, dear visitor!
