glenerrolrd Posted February 22, 2007 Share #1 Â Posted February 22, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) There have been some nice threads on the various 180mm alternatives for the R series. The key advantage to the 180 2.8 APO seems to be its compatibility withe the 1.4X APO Extender. I know that they changed the lens to accept the extender and that you can determine this by checking the rear element . Does anybody know if they changed the model number or better from what serial number on accepts the extender. I have been looking for a LN copy used and most sellers don t know what I am talking about . Also any experience using the 180 2.8 and the extender. glenerrolrd Posted February 22, 2007 Author Share #2 Â Posted February 22, 2007 Can anyone point me to the right reference?
mitchell Posted February 22, 2007 Share #3 Â Posted February 22, 2007 Hi Roger, Â I don't believe the model name was changed in any way, and I don't know serial number starts the new version. Â But, this is just the sort of question that Doug Herr's Wildlight web site answers so well. If you have an R set up you should look into his site: Â http://www.wildlightphoto.com/LeicaReflex/ Â Best, Â Mitchell
pascal_meheut Posted February 22, 2007 Share #4  Posted February 22, 2007 I do not know the serial number but I know they changed the formula in November 2003. But as the oldest models can be retroffited, you can not be sure they will not accept the extender. With the 1.4 extender, the 2.8 180 Apo is still quite good but of course not as good as the 280/4 for instance. Not the same size, the same weight and the same price though.  Also, I find the focusing not so easy with the extender because the focusing ring is just perfect for a 180 and too fast for a 250mm. Also, the f/4 resulting aperture does not help.  At what price are the ones you saw ? I tried to sell mine for 1500€ a few months ago with no luck. I track whats available on ebay, fredmiranda sbuy/sell and a few other spots daily . There were some amazing bargins around Christmas thru the first few weeks in January. Lots of unsold offerings etc. Recently the prices have gone up..I think because of the M price increases and because threre are few lens for sale. I am targeting around $1500 but your price was probably fair. You are right about the retrofiting and I believe the model stayed the same . I already have the 180 summicron and the 180 apo telyt and the older 180 elmarit but for traveling a 180 plus the 1.4 seems ideal.
macusque Posted February 22, 2007 Share #6 Â Posted February 22, 2007 In a similar thread at Fredmiranda' site someone posted the answer he got from Dave Elwell of Leica USA about the version which accepts the 1.4x Apo: Â " The new version started with serial # 3897978 in Nov 2003 "
