dave.gt Posted December 20, 2011 Share #1 Posted December 20, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Well, Christmas is almost here and I just had an idea but don't know how to make it work. I have a Nikon SB-24 and the Leica R4 body. Can this flash be used with the R4 and if so, what settings do I make on the body and the flash? For some reason, I thought there had to be a cord and/or a sync somewhere but my ignorance only goes so far with flash.

Doc Henry Posted December 21, 2011 Share #2 Posted December 21, 2011 Dave, Look at this link : Nikon sb24 user manual I had a Metz flash on my camera R4S but I think it's like the Nikon flash. First I set the R4 in position 1 / 100 (look at the notice of R4), then adjust according to the ISO of the film, the aperture Henry PS: I just realized I took my R4 S for my Leicaflex SL So I correct ... sorry

And is A (automatic) the correct setting on the flash?
Doc Henry Posted December 21, 2011 Share #4 Posted December 21, 2011 Dave did you have the user guide of the R4 * ? Look at p.34 and 35 for example at iso 50 f : 2 if up to 10m (30 feet) f : 2.8 if at 7m (25 f) f : 4 if at 5m (17f ) ... f: 11 if 2m (7f ) f : 22 if 1 m (3 f) the principle is simple, as you already know the flash is far from the subject, more you open the diaphragm subject closer , most the diaphragm is closed Henry http://www.cameramanuals.org/leica_pdf/leica_r4s_mod_p.pdf

dave.gt Posted December 22, 2011 Author Share #9 Posted December 22, 2011 Okay, I set the Nikon SB24 on the R4. Set the shutter dial to X. Set the flash to Auto with f2.0 and aperture ring on camera at 2.0. Flash fired with the shutter opening but the shutter stayed open until I removed the flash from the shoe mount. I give up... Dave, On my R4S, I have a contact for electronic flash like the Metz I put the flash and I put speed at 1 / 100 ( which is "mechanical" and reserved for the flash) I shoot and the flash light starts at the same time Try to set at 1 / 100 to see (not "X") ! Henry Well, I tried...this is getting weird. Since the shutter dial only has 80 and 125, I set it halfway. It didn't work. But this is the weird part. I finished my roll of film, took it out and tried the flash on X and it works fine! Put film back in and it seems to take a forever exposure in other words, the shutter clicks but will not close until I either turn the flash off or remove it. What is it about adding film to an empty camera that would change the way the flash works?

Sorry for the mistake (on my R4S , i have that speed ans is reserved for flash) In this case you must use a sync cable and connect the Nikon flash to R4 and use the plug close to the lens (marked "24" in the manual) and set "X" . Try like that to see if it works Henry

dave.gt Posted December 24, 2011 Author Share #14 Posted December 24, 2011 Merry Christmas, Henry! The flash cord I need does not reside in my desk drawer, so I will have to wait until next week when the camera shop is open to get one. I, like you, think this will be the solution. So, I checked the lighting yesterday afternoon and with the Portra 400, the Cron 50 and the motor drive, I should be fine without the flash. We actually moved the family get-together up to 2:00pm to make things easier for pictures as well as getting the kids down early tonight! The motor drive should make it easier to catch those kids ripping through presents! From our house to yours, may the best of the season and the coming year be with you and your family...warm wishes from the US.
