X1 vs D-lux 5

I've had the X1 coming to 2 years, bought my wife the Dlux5 a year ago.

IMO the X1 is for more "serious" photography and it makes the kind of photos that makes you go "Wow" for such a tiny camera. The dlux5 on the other hand takes "reasonably good" quality photos but is more versatile so it is more for recording the moment.

Depends on your needs really.

BTW my wife absolutely loves the dlux5, it is easy to operate and is beautifully crafted.

Sometimes I think to buy one for my wife as well, mainly to be used for web photos and videos. She uses a dslr for her serious photos. But i'm sparing for an m9 as well, not sure which one will have priorities :D

I have my X1 only since a week and am not an expert in the settings so far. Comming from my M9 I try to shoot fixed ISO as low as possible using fast Summilux lenses. So I tried to shoot at 2.8 with a low ISO's (200) and experienced the same issue - green light out of focus. When I switched for some tests to Auto-ISO with an upper limit of 800 I had no issues in low light. I guess I need to accommodate for the 2.8 aperture with higher ISOs as it might be me causing the issue while pressing the shutter button.

Is that the situation you are in?

IMHO 'best practices' on the x1 utilize ISO100 and f/2.8 . Unless you are in really low light situation I cannot recall getting a flashing green light at 2.8. In poor light I jump to ISO800 and still utilize f/2.8 and find the results acceptable. YMMV

I am waiting for the announcement of the specs for the next leica mirrorless...IMO it makes more practical sense than an M9 which has a sensor with uncertain future (kodak going bust), no AF, RF alignment, etc, etc. Not that it is not a fabulous camera it is, but I just get this feeling that this whole M-thing may no longer be relevant in the near future. For all we know the M10 may be so drastically different from the M9 given that the M9 and M8 is very much to my eyes digital representations of their film counterparts. So perhaps the M10 will be "M' in name only but something very very different.

As for the Dlux5 I would get it for my wife if I were you , it is a very convenient camera.

happy New Year!

Kodak have already sold their sensor business, so them going bust (if they were to) won't make any difference

Kodak Sells Image Sensor Business

Leica will always make a proper M camera. The M camera IS Leica - not any of these point and shoots they sell, no matter how good those point and shoots are.

As I said before sometime I need higher ISOs. This is an example with ISO 800 and f/2.8

In this new era Leica will need to adapt and change business practices, and that includes putting less emphasis on the Ms. You can see leica going in different other directions apart from their PannyLeicas. The X1 in compact, the S in a different class and the upcoming mirrorless as a new class. Relying on MF rangefinder Ms will spell certain death since it only addresses well-to-do rangefinder enthusiasts. So rare is it to find anyone who will switch from the convenience of AF to use a rangefinder, not in this day and age. The truth is what it is, and for every rangefinder cam sold, millions of other cameras get sold. I believe rangefinders as it is will become obsolete in due course after the last generation of users hmmm expire (not sure what the most euphemistic word will be for that).

Unless of course they modernize the M in significant ways to attract new users, but that will also risk pissing off hardcore rangefinder users who are used to the style of shooting with the Ms. The devil and deep blue sea in my opinion.

I admit that I have a lot to learn but surely if the green light comes on the image should be in focus no? Just to clarify, I'm outside of the 30 cm and I'm using the AF, not the AF Macro.:o

First welcome to the forum and to the x1 club! When green light is on it should be in focus (what the camera choiced to be in focus). Are you sure the reason is not due to a low light, low shutter speed with a low iso setting and of consequence the photo is blurred (moved) ?

At what distance is the subject? If not AF macre it should be at least around 80cm minimum.

PS: X1 need some times to get the best out of it but then you'll appreciate the camera very much...

Hello to all.

I've been using D-Lux 4, which is close enough to the 5, and the X1. I like both these cameras a lot. I reach out for the D- Lux almost all the time for work (product and event shots) and general use. I've owned the X1 for several months now and I use it almost exclusively as a creative outlet--street photography, random portraits, landscape. As it's a more precise camera than the D-Lux it also demands more precision from me, but with continuous use I start to mold around it. I feel using manual film cameras before has helped me transition to the X1. I've used an M4-P for many years and didn't really take digital photography as seriously as I did shooting film. With the X1 I feel I'm almost back to my beloved M4-P.

Hope this experience helps.

I have the X1 and used to have the DLux4. In all respects the X1 has far better IQ, but the DLux4 had the edge with 24mm and pocketability.

But better IQ reigns.

Would also say it takes time to learn the X1

Personally what I like in the M cameras is not the rangefinder as itself but size and weight for a camera with excellent optical performances. Rangefinder is a delicate system (I need to calibrate my m7 at least once a year :(). A new M camera with a different focusing system would be ok for me, but how about the lenses M user already have? I m waiting as well to know more about the new mirrorless system, hope it comes not too late. By now I stay with the "team" m7 + x1! Film + digital ? Why not? There is a synergy :)

I'm afraid we are going off topic, ciao robert
