What is the status of the Digital-Modul-R?

Has it been discontinued?

B&H no longer lists the item in its on-line system.

Calument is showing a 19-21 week delivery.

Stephen Grady said, "I am told that the Leica DMR back is officially gone.

Imacon support is gone too. Leica support remains." on the LUC mailing list.

(1) is this true?

(2) what are the implications?

(3) what were we who bought one?

Dear List,

Sorry to re-raise the issue that had already been discussed, but I was up in the hills, and out of touch while the discussion raged.

However, this seems like a very short life cycle for a Leica product, and I was caught by surprise when I got back to sea level.

I read the discussion, this, and I guess that am still interested about thoughts on the implications of this on the value of used R8's and R9's, used R lenses, and used DMR's.

I also wonder if producing a DMR in the first place was a) a bad business decision, B) a bad technical decision, or c) turned bad because of supplier-vendor failures to meet specs and delivery.

Also, by now, I would expect that Leica would have announced what the future of the R will be, since some of us have a significant, long term investment in the system, and need to continue to make decisions about the type of equipment we buy.

This is the $64,000 question. The answer to all three points is no. Imacon joined with Hasselblad soon after the DMR was released, and never held up their end of the agreement. Bad luck, but there is no reason why this should affect future directions. Leica has stated there will be more developments for the R. The DMR continues to be fantastic, Imacon or not.

Note though the DMR isn't actually discontinued, it is "sold out".

You can still buy it, but it's now built on-demand.

Is that true? Build on-demand does not equal discontinued. So far everyone says the DMR is discontinued, which means Leica will no more manufacture this product even you are placing order for requesting a new one from the factory.

Refer to the customer forum there is a topic 'DMR Survival' in which shows many comments and feedbacks from the R users on the DMR discontinued issue.

Producing the DMR was an excellent decision: made some R users to stick with the system, attracted a few others (and not only Guy) and gave Leica some first hand experience they used for the M8...

I agree. I do think the DMR has produced some profits, directly and by means an increase of sales of R lenses.

The DMR has been absolutely necessary. Now is the moment for a new R digital camera.
