RF patch 0.72 vs 0.85 finders

Hi everyone

So the 0.85 vf is more prone to flare/whiteout than the 0.72 vf. Why is this the case when the M3's larger 0.91 vf is not? Does it have to do with the internal construction of the vf rather than magnification?

As I understand it the 0.85 MP vf is less flare prone than the M6 0.85 vf (or have I completely misunderstood?) - why is that?

Now, if only Leica would see fit to bring back the 0.85 finder for the M9.....

I don't think they will (for the reason already mentioned by John above). The thicker body (and greater 'tunnelling' effect vis-à-vis the film body) would mean it would be very difficult (to impossible) to see the 35mm framelines in a 0.85x M9 and I don't think Leica would be comfortable selling a body suitable only for 50mm or longer lenses.

That's a good point Thomas. I had read about magnifiers a while ago and I was left with the impression that they reduce contrast, thus not being as good as the actual 0.85 viewfinder.

This might be true in theory but I've never had a problem with reduced contrast using the 1.25x magnifier with both film and digital bodies. I don't routinely use the magnifier for some of the reasons already mentioned (makes the camera awkward when you are putting it in and taking it out of a bag, has a bit of a 'poke you in the eye' feel about it, etc.) but when I am using the camera with a 50mm for an extended period of time, I find it less tiring on my eyes to have the magnifier in place.
