Presently, I am successfully producing documentaries with the R4 and 3 cam Cron 50. For purely lust reasons (;)), I am looking seriously at the R8 at KEH and a few other reputable dealers...black body most likely. Sensual. Great companion for the R4 as well as the seductress M3.:)

So, will the 3cam Cron 50 work on the R8/R9 or will I have to buy a ROM lens for those cameras?

3 cam or 3rd cam lenses will work fine.

The R8 I used to have was the finest film SLR I ever used.

That is good news as the ROM lenses are quite a bit more. Pardon my ignorance, but what is the ROM feature supposed to do on the R8/R9 that the 3-cam lens doesn't?

The ROM told the DMR which lens was being used.

From what I could see, when I used one, it doesn't actually do anything on a straight R8 or R9, despite being on lenses which pre-dated the DMR, but it might have have linked into a flash unit, to tell that what lens is being used.

Well, that certainly seems to make sense. Chances of my getting a DMR are remote (though it would be cool!), so it looks like I can continue with my present Cron 50 and still save up for Lux 80.:)

It provided focal length information which in turn was passed on to automatically zooming flash units (eg Mets 54 MZ). It also provided information, programmed into the ROM chip, specific to that individual lens sample, about its aperture dynamics, which enabled the camera to control its operation optimally. The electronically communicated lens aperture setting also enabled the true aperture of non-fixed aperture ROM zoom lenses to be displayed in the camera, and enabled the ROM 2X extender also to communicate the actual aperture to the camera. None of this is essential though.

He he, me too :D but I might have to sell my Lux 80-R to fund 2 back up M bodies for my next project in Afghanistan :(

That'd be a real bummer... But ya gotta do what ya gotta do. You can always get another I suppose.

I think Dave might be able to help you with that lens though - right Dave? :D
