Very interesting. They seem to be discussing primarily the growth in sales of 400 Portra large format film, but there is always the possibility of the "trickle-down" effect, to 120 and 35mm. plasticman Posted November 22, 2011 Share #3 Posted November 22, 2011 Very interesting. They seem to be discussing primarily the growth in sales of 400 Portra large format film, but there is always the possibility of the "trickle-down" effect, to 120 and 35mm. The 400 they referred to near the beginning was speed not format (the updated Portra400 from last year). Pro film sales are up and offsetting the global decline, according to this podcast. Extremely good news, so I guess this thread will die pretty quickly as it won't attract the usual doom-and-gloom suspects that tend to keep even the smallest bits of bad news at the top of the forum for weeks on end... adan Posted November 22, 2011 Share #4 Posted November 22, 2011 Well, to be clear, what is mentioned is "revenue growth." Which doesn't necessarily mean selling more rolls or boxes, since Kodak raised prices this year. If I sold 50 prints last year at $500 each, and I raise my print prices to $600 and sell 45 prints this year, I'll have "revenue growth" even with a declining sales volume. I also note the Kodak guy mentions introducing "4 great new Portra films" in the past couple of years. Which is true, but he carefully doesn't mention how many films were discontinued in the same time frame. That's not "doom and gloom" - it's just being realistic and avoiding living in a fantasy world. Clouds have silver linings - but that doesn't mean you can leave your umbrella at home. The more interesting part was the mention that large-format camera-maker Keith Canham is acting as a film distributor, pulling together orders from his camera customers to make one big order for Kodak every so often. There's a businessman who faced up to the challenges of film's decline, and found a way to cope. Rather than hiding his head in the sand.
plasticman Posted November 23, 2011 Share #5 Posted November 23, 2011 Adan, I'm not going to contradict what you say, but I got a very positive vibe from this podcast. Plus I thought I'd try to keep the thread alive as it's a pity that the smallest crumb of bad news tends to get tens if not hundreds of replies, and many thousands of views, while good news sinks hastily without a trace. AlanG? - surely there's some cloud to this silver lining that you can find for us to discuss ad infinitum? Someone?
wattsy Posted November 23, 2011 Share #6 Posted November 23, 2011 It's good news but I still might buy a larger than normal amount of Portra in the near future to put in the freezer (didn't you do this recently Mani?).
plasticman Posted November 23, 2011 Share #7 Posted November 23, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) It's good news but I still might buy a larger than normal amount of Portra in the near future to put in the freezer (didn't you do this recently Mani?). Busted! I actually went straight to a local camera store and bought everything they had in Portra400 and 160 in 135 and 120 format. Luckily they didn't have more, as my brainstorm was possibly something of an overreaction to the fire-sale of the sensor business. Having said that, I intend to keep the stockpile topped-up - but next time I'll be buying from the dev lab. Seems to me that the local labs will disappear before Kodak does, and I should really support them as much as I can.
