Shade Posted November 20, 2011 Share #41 Posted November 20, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Many great suggestions posted but I personally would not get more than 2 lenses, I tend to like a one lens setup which makes you really learn and get acquainted with your equipment. Whilst I agree how great an m3 is, but lets not fOrget that there are benefits on a digital M as well. However, someone mentioned the rd-1, i actually really like the analogue indicator on that camera, I wonder why Leica didnt make something like that.. To make yourself feel a million dollars & have this inspiration pour forth from you Appleman spend 1/3 on yourself (traveling + camera) 1/3 on your family, friends 1/3 on causes close to your heart. Jeff S Posted November 20, 2011 Share #45 Posted November 20, 2011 As an aside, you might want to consider better insurance, assuming you have access to policies similar to those available in the US. I insure 2 M8.2s (each valued in advance at MY specified $6,000) and 3 lenses (valued at MY specified $11,000), so $23,000 total. And I'm allowed to claim up to 150% of these values, without updating, if prices appreciate on new gear in the meantime. The policy covers everything...damage, loss, etc...even due to my own stupidity, with no deductible. All of this costs roughly $300 per year as a separate rider to my home policy, which is a premier plan through a reputable company. I used to spend a fraction of this on film in the old days, so really no additional cost at all for total peace of mind...and enough cash to replace everything I own with new gear if desired. algrove Posted November 21, 2011 Share #48 Posted November 21, 2011 I have a similar policy and during a recent add-on conversation the agent informed me that accidental damage is also included in the premium.

IkarusJohn Posted November 21, 2011 Share #50 Posted November 21, 2011 Appleman, Interesting problem - 9 grand and wanting new kit. The disappointment over the loss soon wears off, I guess! If you were happy with your M8.2, then I assume you're wanting to stay with digital. If that's the case, ignore all the film recommendations. Much as I like my MP, if I want digital, I don't want to use a film camera. So, if you're into digital, and you like Leica, ditch the idea of an X100 - what's the point? Similarly silly little point and shoot things. Their value will fall through the floor as quickly as a Leica, if not quicker. So, we're looking at digital Leica, I assume also M, bearing in mind the money you have available and what you're interested in. This is where it gets interesting. It's fair to say that next year we will be looking at mirrorless interchangeable etc etc, maybe M10. But then, that will always be the case. Next year will always have the prospect of something newer, better, not cheaper. To my mind, you choice is either now (M9) or next year (M10 or whatever it is). The one common factor is the M lenses you will need to shoot with. My suggestion would be to either buy a new M9P or a second hand M9 and get the upgrade (if it's cheaper - they'll do a CLA and you will get extra warranty). Then you have a perfectly functioning camera you can use now. Alternatively, buy a couple of good Leica lenses, and a NEX-5N with an adapter from Novoflex, or the Ricoh GXR with Mmodule and bank your M10 money until everything becomes clear. You will be back into accumulating M lenses, and you'll have a good digital camera that will tide you over till next year is clarified. Cheers John
macjim Posted November 29, 2011 Share #51 Posted November 29, 2011 I've noticed one thing in all the suggested alternatives to an M9, apart from the M9-P and Leica film cameras, they are not full frame cameras. Not being an owner of a Leica M camera (yet!) I can't give you a definitive answer to your question but I'd say go with the M9 and a choice of lenses that suit your style of photography. I've posted a similar question in the forum for advice as I'm expecting to have a similar sum of money to spend on a full frame Leica camera, so I'm hoping to get some clear and good advice myself. Yes, an M10 will be on the horizon - and an M11,12,13, etc but your needs are now. Personally I'd go for the M9 and two lenses for now - 35 & 50 mm - and put the balance of money away and then see how you get on with that choice, and when you have had time and experience with them, that would give you an idea of what other lenses you could then buy to extend you range. Well, that's my tuppence worth in...
NZDavid Posted November 29, 2011 Share #52 Posted November 29, 2011 Provided you want to keep with an M I'd go along with Macjim but make it a 24 or 28 plus a 50.
appleman Posted December 31, 2011 Author Share #53 Posted December 31, 2011 Many thanks to you all for your advice. My insurance claim has come through and I am now the proud owner of a new M9P and 1 lens (Cron 50mm) with the new 35mm Summilux on order. Just deciding about a wide angle, maybe 28mm Elmarit. Had a problem with the SanDisk Extreme crashing the M9 after downloading the new firmware but I'v booked in a M9 user guide course at the Akademie so hopefully they can sort it. Onward and upwards. Brighton1975 Posted December 31, 2011 Share #54 Posted December 31, 2011 Many thanks for all your comments. Not sure about DigitalPowerShots suggestion that I should buy a different kind of glass (a ring for the wife). I like ramosa's comment about buying a X100 (£850) for the interim, I have done some research and it seems a good choice. Mr Appleman - if you have any horses, hold them! I bought the Fuji X100 back in May. I absolutely loved the look and feel of the camera. And then I started to use it... The biggest problem by far is the focusing, both auto and manual (god, the manual focusing...). Using it was a painful experience and the fact that Fuji continued to ignore the hundreds/thousands of customer complaints about the focus issues, it was a major factor in selling mine and getting the far uglier but far superior Sony NEX 5n. I'm selling the 18-55mm Sony kit lens and buying a second hand 28mm Summarit (whilst I decide whether to get the M8.2 or the M9). I know there's been some bad blood between Leica and X100 users and I personally steer well clear of such fanboydom but, having come from using the M9 I think you would be SO frustrated with the X100. My advice would be to invest in the cheaper NEX 5n, buy a lens adaptor and when you;ve got your new Leica you'll also have a fantastic back-up camera. framestore Posted January 3, 2012 Share #55 Posted January 3, 2012 Many thanks to you all for your advice. My insurance claim has come through and I am now the proud owner of a new M9P and.... Good to know that you bought the best one. I also recently purchased the M9P and am seeking an insurance company in uk. which insurance or deals do you have? kokoshawnuff Posted January 3, 2012 Share #56 Posted January 3, 2012 Just deciding about a wide angle, maybe 28mm Elmarit. With the 50 cron in hand and a 35 lux on the way, a 21mm would give you something quite different from the 35/50 focal lengths (whereas 28mm is not). The two Zeiss 21mm and the Leica Super Elmar are 3 wonderful lenses and are pretty much available right now without too much of a search
