SP0 Posted February 18, 2007 Share #1 Posted February 18, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) As reported by others previously, when a cable is used to transfer DNG files to a Windows XP PC, the files appear on the PC as ".TIF" instead of ".DNG". They still seem to work like DNG files so it doesn't get in the way of immediate workflow. My question is for longer-term archiving, should I rename these files to .DNG - is this safe to do? It worries me a bit to have .TIF files around, which may have incompatibilities with something in the future.
mjh Posted February 19, 2007 Share #2 Posted February 19, 2007 Have you tried changing the extension into “.dng”? I suspect these are really DNGs erroneously recognized as TIFFs. Technically, all raw file formats are special cases of the TIFF file format and follow the TIFF specification. Still, giving them a “.tif” extension is somewhat misleading. Shootist Posted February 19, 2007 Share #3 Posted February 19, 2007 It's a Windows problem and that the camera is not listed as a storage device. Do yourself a big favor and buy a card reader. The RAW files will then appear as DNG and you will save the camera battery power.
