Sigma SD 14 samples

I think here are two subjects that can be discussed:

1. Quality of Sigma SLR Talk Forum

2. Quality of the Sigma SD 14 images

I’m more interested in the latter. As of now only the first has been discussed.

I think the images have an extraordinary high quality. With a Foveon sensor there is no need for interpolation. A Bayer sensor measures only 1/3 of the subject, 2/3 of the image information is calculated, causing color artifacts (especially in border areas where calculations easily can go wrong) i.e “purple fringing”. I posted on purple fringing in another thread. Nobody seem to have noticed it. The discussion went lively further on “chromatic aberration”. A Leica lens doesn't cause "purple fringing".

It wouldn’t surprise me if Canon came out with a Foveon like sensor.

First the forums and you wonder why i am here only any more. It's ugly out there and it is just not worth the fight. LOL

Anyway i am interested in this technology as a whole and overall the Sigma sensor looks very interesting but it's in the wrong body with the wrong lenses for me. But as Pascal points out there are some limits to it also

yes Simon

no matter the numbers tho, what has my eye is the visual resolution of past foveon sensors

and others here have mentioned that it may be a street shooter solution

one particularly charming fellow believes it to be a 'landmark camera'

i think it's fair to discuss anything for the sake of comparison. recently i bought several sigma lenses specifically for their color, also they've got wide-angles. here's a gallery shot with the 10-20 at 1600 on the 20d. sure, resolution not perfect, but what people generally love is the overall effect. one of these blown up to 12 by 18 and it looked great. (i got five lenses from various sources, several new, and they've all been sharp out of the box.)

this said i've bought three leica r lenses lately and used them on the 20d. they've a completely different feeling. here's a gallery shot first with the leica 50 summicron and then with the sigma 50 2.8.

i hate to say it, but in general people love vivid colors. i actually like the sigma effect better on the canon than what i've seen on the sigma's. the sigma cameras seem to make the colors rather bland.

ps. on the other hand judge from the polaroid digicam foveon at

this is a hundred dollar camera. i suggest you buy one and try it out for yourself. there is only the effect you want, not some dream of equipment. for example, here is the polaroid used during performance to get a specific feeling outside technical perfection:

I guess it's a boys thing. If someone preferes a Nikon over a Canon, or a Canon over a Leica, big deal, it's their choice. There are no 'bad' DSLRs that I'm aware of. People seem to have a need to justify and defend their own choices to an alarming degree. Similar on Photo.net, though there it seems to revolve around some people in the Leica forum saying what a poor camera the M8 is :-)

there seems to be a lot of flamers out there

predominantly Canon armed, and there is usually more than one

its not about the equipment, its about bullying

thats a particular behavior i just cant stand

i try to defeat their arguments calmly, on technical ground

but it makes me look like them i guess

Well I gave up on it and maybe spent too much time on it in the past and yes Rob it comes down to mine is better than yours , I also believe it comes down to people being jealous. Very true when it comes to leica because of the cost to engage in it. Than the other part is some actually think they know what there talking about and don't or seriously misinformed. Anyway not my bag of tea anymore.

I'm quite aware that the Foveon provides better imagery than either the lousy Canons or the lousy M8 I own. The Leica DMR also provides better imagery than the above - so why can't we all admit it ?

if they can patch up the noise issues they had on the Fuji's

and make the colours more life like

the excellent resolution it has might even make that true

but because the market for CCD devices is so huge

Im not optimistic
