gfspencer Posted October 16, 2011 Share #1 Posted October 16, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Friday night my wife and I went to a charity dinner/concert in San Francisco. I was wearing my M8 around my neck. A few folks asked me if I were the event photographer. (I wasn't.) The rest of the folks just let me go where I pleased and take any pictures that I wanted to take. Who says people don't recognize a Leica?

Who says people don't recognize a Leica? I don't want to burst your bubble, but it has happen to me with my gf's over-sized P&S. They figure it's some high-tech camera. In other situations... they would bother me when i pull out my D3, even with my ID around my neck In any proper event i have been too, the media is controlled (i usually had a card for the event + personal ID). It seems the event planner didn't do a good job and that's scary.

Peter H Posted October 17, 2011 Share #5 Posted October 17, 2011 I find my Leica attracts more far more interested attention than any big Nikon or Canon. Most of the attention is friendly, people are curious even if they don't know a Leica from a lightbulb. DSLRs, on the other hand, are so ubiquitous that they're boring, and are routinely ignored. Every middle-aged man has one, with a big fat lens and a huge petal-shaped hood and a beer-belly to boot. Honestly, would you give him a second glance? So much for the notion that M-cameras are discreet!
Luskentyre Posted October 17, 2011 Share #6 Posted October 17, 2011 I think you're right. Just after this picture was taken at the scenic Eilean Donan Castle, the three photographers spotted what I was doing and came over to ask about my beaten up Leica M5. All three were from a French family on a photographic tour of Scotland and we had a great time discussing cameras, locations and photography in general. I dont think they would have bothered if I had a regular SLR. They all had state of the art Nikons.
