Five-star treatment at Leica Mayfair

After almost two years' use, the battery charger on my M9 recently went on the blink, so I took it into Leica Mayfair in London along with my Leica passport, receipt and guarantee, fully expecting it to be sent off to Solms, leaving me without a charger for perhaps a month or more.

Instead, I was immediately given a replacement. No questions asked, no quibble, no need to produce my documents or even provide proof of purchase. Just simple, polite efficiency. I was delighted.

They are very professional, I love dealing with them. The only annoying part is you get to try any exotic lens you want but they never have them in stock. They do sell their demo equipment from time to time after a visit back to solms. I got a 35mm Summarit and an MP from their ex-demo with passport and warranty which is great. They were the only shop in London with an MP in stock at that time.

Agree that Leica Mayfair are great. I was there to try and buy a chrome M9P in July and though they did not have one, they helped me track one down in Selfridges. I had a great time there trying their binos and M9s out with a cuppa tea thrown in too.

How different from a year ago, on this very forum, when we had comments such as:

"Perfidious Leica!"

"How very dare they shut Milton Keynes!"

"Service will suffer!"

"Nobody will travel to Central London!!"

"Burn the witch!"

Ok, I paraphrase, and I made the last one up, but that was the tone.

I'm pleased to see otherwise now.:)

Regards,

Bill

Before we get too excited, they are hardly likely to repair a failed charger, it's made in China and it's not even worth the admin cost booking it in for someone to look at it and say, yes, it's failed. Still you got your problem solved which is what counts.

My Summilux with the dodgy paintwork is supposedly back from Solms and waiting for me to collect when I can find the time, so I am hoping to be one Happy Camper too.

Another delighted customer here; since getting my M9 from them in July 2010, I've bought all my Leica equipment from them (apart from a couple of filters). The service is superb and the shop has a nice, chilled vibe to it; great coffee too!!

Having used Customer Care once, I'm delighted with their service too.

Highly recommended :-)

I can't say that I have had the pleasure of purchasing from Mayfair, but I have just this week bought an M6 from Robert Caplan on Bury Street and I have to say they were a pleasure to deal with and chat to.

Richard Caplan are always great to deal with in my experience - Richard himself is a lovely guy - the italics are there in part so that if you get to meet him, you don't get his name wrong to his face :)

I like Leica Mayfair in principle, and like that it exists and has stuff to play with.

However, I've not bought from there, and I'm not that inclined to. The product knowledge of the staff is usually somewhat less than what one can glean from the internet, to the point of sometimes being just plain wrong - I was discouraged for a while from using Leica professionally after being assured by them that there was no support scheme for professionals in place (there was then, and is now).

There's probably very few other places where you'll get to play with a 0.95 Noctilux mind you, so it does have its uses.

...yes, Bill, as an erstwhile witch-hunter and MK-lover, I'm forced to admit that things do appear to be improving.

Leica Mayfair actually entertained a recent Focometer 2 enquiry and promptly advised me that it would have to be referred to Solms. This differs significantly from the previous "Oh, as we no longer carry that product you will need to call Germany. Sorry". Got a call from Solms the following day but was unable to answer - caller left no message. My return calls to the German number went unanswered, and there was no voicemail facility attached to the number.

"Hello, Solms, come in, over..."

thats freaky, I just logged on to say the same, searched for 'mayfair' to see if anyone had mentioned the store before and your post came up first!

same story here, charger died on me last week.

My local store in Cambridge where I'd bought my M9 told me they'd have to charge me 180 pounds for a new one (!), but I was working in Mayfair this morning so I thought i'd pop in and see if they could do any better, i handed it over saying it was broke, they just passed me a new one - didnt ask to see any proof of purchase, no questions at all.

Nice people.

Unlike the smug, patronising arse I saw in the Cambridge shop. It's a shame, I like to support local shops but he's done something similar before to my beloved. Might be the last they see of me.

I wouldn't blame you, Campkins is only marginally better than Jessops and not really worth supporting if the service is below par.

There used to be an interesting Leica dealer in Cambridge near the Lion Yard car park that was half camera shop, half hi-fi shop but I think it has gone now.

...pleased to report that Solms got back to me today - twice, actually. The first call was of a diagnostic nature, after which our very agreeable man from Solms (let's just call him "Chris") went away to speak with the elders. He called back 45 minutes later, having consulted with the head boffin, and proffered a solution, which I found wholly acceptable.

So, seeing as I am quick to criticise when things go awry, I would like to be just as effusive in my praise for both Mayfair and Solms. It is also reassuring to know that Leica keeps a beady eye on things around here, and is prepared to act when necessary.

Nice work, folks - take a bow. And keep it up.

I hope they're as good as everyone says, I'm taking my 2 week old M9 for a sensor clean in the morning. I'm told I might get it back the same day which would indeed be great service.

Yes it would take at least ten minutes to clean a sensor properly!:D
