M2 Viewfinder

Recommended Posts

Hello Everyone

Could you tell me what the viewfinder magnification is for a leica M2 ?

At risk of appearing lazy, if anyone could tell me what the three settings for the framelines are, as well, it would be great !! :o

It is 0.72 magnification.

Robert,

The frames are 35, 50 & 90. Be aware that these frames are larger in a .72 than they appear on an M6 or M7 or MP with a .72 viewfinder. When the 28mm frame was added after the M5, the other frames shrank in size. It's great for a 50 but tougher for a 35 to see everything at once. Also, the v/f may be a bit dimmer than an M4 or M5.

Why do you ask?

Nice one Robert. Mine is older than yours (101xxxx), so yours is probably an early 60s one.

The 35 frameline is next to useless if you wear glasses, but, fortunately, the whole frame is more or less the same coverage. However, to see the whole fram, you will have to look round inside the viewfinder.

Still takes bloody good pictures with a 35 though

;)

If you send it to MK for a CLA, they will also replace the fresnel screen window and viewfinder glass for you, all for around a hundred quid.

Reported to be E++ the shutter seems smooth and it looks like everything works - I'll try a couple of flims through it then maybe send it to MK for a CLA

I was interested in the M3 viewfinder because of the extra mag but didn't realise the M3 could be older than the M2

Andy mine is 114xxx - I've put a 50VC on the front for now, taken from my lllf ... ;)

William Thanks for the really useful link

Looks good. Find a strap which will not mark that top plate if it's as clean as it looks. When did it last have a CLA? Ten years is a reasonable rule.

What's that you are using for a body cap? :p Better find a 35/2 and a meter. You remember meters? :)

Robert, the M2 was released as a cheaper alternative to the M3. So it's quite possible that the M3 could be older. Having owned an M2 and M3 (still have the M3), overall I prefered the M2.

In case you're wondering I kept the M3 because I also had an M6 and I liked the choice of magnifications. I still have the M6 oo :-)

If the camera needs a CLA I can highly recommend Malcolm Taylor...

Steve

It was only the v/f magnification that made me hesitate for a moment as I might have liked 0.95 but this one looks a good one and certainly seems to have been worth the cash - does anyone know if there's a manual on the internet somewhere for the M2 ?
