povlj Posted September 27, 2011 Share #1 Posted September 27, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) I should appreciate someone providing me with an objective assessment and comparison of image quality of D-Lux5 (Panny DMCLX5) with that of Canon Powershot S95. I am aware of MPs, sensor sizes (the Leica slightly larger), apertures (both f/2.0), and "commercial" reviews, but I should like to hear a more professional and objective comparison. Thanks, Povl
Advertisement Posted September 27, 2011 Posted September 27, 2011 Hi povlj, Take a look here D-Lux5 Image Quality . I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
petemasty Posted September 29, 2011 Share #2 Posted September 29, 2011 Povi I first of all must point out that I have used the Powershot S90, not the S95. Printing at A4 AND A3 I can say categorically that the D Lux 5 gives better printed quality (so long as the post processing is done sympathetically of course). That said, the difference between the two is not that great that it is immediately noticeable at A4. I think you have to do some pixel peeping. i found the DLux5 better at higher ISOs too but wouldnt push it above ISO400. as far as RAW is concerned, there is a slight difference in colour cast with all settings being 'equal', but would say that colour cast could be deemed as purely subjective as it can easily be altered in Post Processing. I hope this goes in some small ay to helping you make a decision. I am trying to find the right point and shoot for my wife who refuses to go beyond p&s activity. She has been using Canons forever, and I'm trying to talk her into Leica (am myself a happy M9 owner). She could stay with Canon, like the new, yet to be introduced S100 Powershot, if its image quality is same or better than what you indicate for S90. Your comments helped us deciding. bmc Posted October 3, 2011 Share #5 Posted October 3, 2011 i cant comment on the picture quality because ive never compared it the the s90 or 95. i have compared it to the g12 and both are about the same. but i will add that i love pani, and ive always had great experiences until this camera. i have been unbelievably unhappy with the pani lx5. it just doesnt hold up to normal use and abuse. ive had it 8 months or so. it broke on me the first time out of the box on my first trip. it went back for 3 months and they refused a warranty repair. i just took it on my last trip and again it failed me. the flash would pop up, but not work. this is a real problem since one of the main reasons i bought this camera was to be a back up point and shoot with a flash to my m8. the controls also are terrible. if left in a bag (wifes purse?) the image size selector can shift or change by being bumped around inside. so you will pull it out to take a quick snap shot and realize that it is in 1:1 instead of 3:2. same think happens with the MF AF and Macro Focus selector. it gets bumped and you will pull it out to capture a quick shot and not understand why it wont focus. i think build quality and customer service is much better with the cannon (g12 for sure). in hind sight i wish i would have purchased the s95. i have actually resorted to using my old p&s pani. i know you asked about the image quality, and i have taken some incredible images with it. but ive done the same thing with my iphone. i had to add my 2 cents about the functionality and build quality, especially since you are giving it to your wife. vinster Posted November 2, 2011 Share #6 Posted November 2, 2011 LX5 faulty you should have bought a D-Lux 5 havent had to sample the service mine has done over 12,000 shotsout with a flicker of a problem.Still takes amazing shots. If had been problematic im sure Leica would have sorted it asap with out a doubt. I have a Digilux D2 that was recalled and had the sensor replaced, any camera can be returned with this problem even after 8 years.
