Interesting M8/card problem

Today I was trying to figure out why an older Epson P2000 mass storage reader couldn't see my M8 files, while it worked for other people. I changed card brands, from Lexar to Canon, and the Canon-branded card worked fine in the P2000. But: the Canon card I was using was one I got free when I bought a P&S, and I never used because it was only 32mb (makes you wonder why they even bother giving it to you.) Anyway, I stuck it in the M8, and took two shots, and got a message that said the card was full. Interestingly, the camera then froze up. Screen went off, but the top LCD was still on, showing the battery charge. The camera wouldn't turn off, either -- and nothing else worked (play, info, etc.) I pulled the battery, waited a few seconds, reloaded the battery, turned it on, and it started working fine again. I wonder if a card-full error has some kind of bug that freezes the software? Anybody else notice that?

Yes, I've had trouble when the card fills up, not just with the camera operation but with the data on the card. It seems to take much longer to download the images to a PC, maybe some sort of fragmentation.

I have 4 golden rules now about using the M8...

1. Don't fill up the card completely.

2. Re-format a card in the camera before use.

3. Don't let the battery go completely flat, change it when it's down to 1 bar.

4. Set the WATE to 0.5m focus distance before mounting it on the camera.
