Interesting addition to this thread, perhaps. This M2 (s.n. 1049499) is currently being sold on eBay:

Leica M2 Black Paint. | eBay

Although the seller does not say so, it looks like a restoration, and one very similar to that on my M3 discussed in this thread.

Notice the unmarked baseplate, as well as the simplified style of the bolt and bulb icons over the flash sockets in the back. I would guess that the sockets themselves have also been converted.

Perhaps all traceable to the restoration program that Luigi recalls having read about (see post #11)?

I should also add: the price is not dissimilar. The M3 has left me too broke even to consider this one.

Don't know where this may lead, but I thought it interesting to flag up.

I recently acquired a IIIc converted to IIIFBDST by Leitz Wetzlar. The serial number has an asterisk after it. The script on the top plate is GMBH in caps rather than the Drp, obviously a IIIg era top plate circa 1957 or so. The camera is almost mint. The body is original but the original shark skin has been replaced with NEW shark skin. More interesting is the 50/2 Summicron is marked 683xxx*. Perhaps a restored Summicron. I have never seen one that had such an early serial number. Perhaps the camera had a Summitar on it, the user requested an upgrade, they trashed the Summitar and gave him a Summicron with same number and the asterisk.
