Greetings Folks,

With all these sad reports of forum members having their equipment stolen, I thought I'd post an article I wrote a short while ago with some ideas of how to try and avoid theft:

Secure Your Gear | Photo This & That

I hope that some may find it useful.

I have mentioned PacSafe often here. In addition, my 1999 Taurus wagon has a 'basement' compartment that is lockable, but such are easily popped so I have a small safe bolted into the area with fender bolts which cannot be undone from the outside (underneath).

And add a hidden GPS transponder.

You have it made.

NIce post but securing a bag to a hand rail of a bath is a bad idea. The flat ring on each side of the handle lifts up exposing the screws. The would-be thief has only to unscrew the hand rail from the wall to remove the handle.

Indeed - wherever possible, if there are any exposed water or radiator pipes, you should secure to those. Even though it's still not impossible to unscrew a water-pipe, it's a whole lot more trouble, messy and noisy than quietly removing a few towel-rail screws.

PS: I'd never seen the PacSafe before - amazingly good idea, and naturally not only for photo equipment.

You're absolutely right; a handrail and even pipes can be unscrewed. The aim though is to stop the opportunist. If you're up against a professional thief who is tooled up, then not much will stop them. The harder we make it for someone to steal something, the more likely it is that they won't.
