Diopter finalized

For some time now I have been having trouble focusing with all my M cameras. I wear reading glasses of +1.5 diopter and thought if I bought a +1.5 Leica diopter it would solve my problem. So I ordered a +1.5 and I still had problems. Leica states that the viewfinder is set at a -.5 diopter so then I thought OK I need a +2. So I ordered one of those. It was worse then the +1.5. I then read that the viewfinder is also set a a distance of 2 meters, about 7 feet. Well at seven feet I see pretty good and if I'm wearing my reading glasses I need to take them off to see clearly at around 7 feet. So I got to thinking that a +1 diopter would work better so I ordered one of those. Well It came today and boy what a difference. Near or far I can actually focus my eye on the subject and focusing the camera is much easier.

So those looking to get a diopter for there M's take into account that the viewfinder is at a distance of 2 meters, 7 feet, and get a diopter that matches your glasses that work at that distance Plus (+) the Minus (-) .5 that the viewfinder is set at.

At least now I have all the diopters I will ever need for the rest of my life.

Ed: Thanks for the heads up. I have good distance vision, but need close up glasses. I have bifocal glasses that allows reading (the bottom portion of the bifocals), and the top part is for computer distance (about 2 feet or so). I, like you, do not need glasses for distance (including 7 feet). However I am left eyed, and it so happens that my left eye is about 20/25 or so, whereas my right eye is about 20/20. I was thinking a small (+) diopter to enhance my left eyed focusing. The best way would be to go to a dealer and trial and error select the proper diopter, but non are close by. Since I can focus with my let eye (but it is a struggle), I was thinking of a plus 1/2 as a starting point.

Regards

Dave

Ed This was a helpful post as I have exactly this problem. I am surprised at the solution but its very easy to test at any drug store.

Well that is what started me on the LESS + diopter then what I wear for looking at the PC monitor and reading. When I started needing reading glasses I used +1.25 and still have a pair of them laying around. With those on the rangefinder patch and the rest of viewfinder was more in focus throughout the near/far range but still a little blurry.

My problem was I had already order a +2 so I just bit the bullet and ordered a +1.

I have NO Leica dealer anywhere around me let alone a dealer that would have a full range of Leica accessories.
