Snakepottery Posted August 22, 2011 Share #1 Posted August 22, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have been through the archives and there seems to be numerous comments on batteries, however, I can't find out if it is OK to leave a battery in the charger (and plugged in/switched on) for long periods. My problem is that I go for quite long periods without using the M8 and of course it appears to hold charge in the camera, but (as it did yesterday) dies very quickly when you start to use it. (Grrr, had left my spare battery at home!) I was curious as to whether the charger worked like those classic car battery conditioners which keep it toppped up and ready to go. I am well aware that a car battery is lead acid and the Leica a LiOn battery so to those physicists/chemist out there I apologise if it is a really stupid comparison! They seem to flatten too if left in your bag for ages too? I suppose the obvious answer is to recharge it before using it... !! Or use the M8 more! Jeff S Posted August 22, 2011 Share #2 Posted August 22, 2011 The manual (at least on the M8.2) says "there is no risk of overcharging." The manual also provides other guidance. For instance, the replaceable battery also provides charge to the internal battery back-up, and that after about 3 months of non-use, the back-up will run down and settings will be lost. In addition, even when the camera is switched off, the battery continues to provide a no-load current to save the date, so that it can run down over extended periods of non-use. As you said, just use the camera a lot and charge the battery after; the rewards will be far greater than lack of battery problems. Oh, and reading the manual is good, too.
