M8 not powering up

I have a feeling that this may be a service issue but thought I'd ask here first.

A couple of weeks ago while in vacation my M8 just decided to power off. Now, if I try to turn it on the red light on the back by the dial flashes a few times and then nothing. Is this a problem that I can solve myself or is my M8 going on a road trip?

It's 4 years old, never had any issues with it, not the latest firmware but I think that's moot now as I couldn't install the latest anyway.

Does it behave the same with every card you have? What does it do when you start it without any card? Do you use SD or SDHC cards? Mine did not start properly with an SDHC card until I upgraded the firmware.

I thought just for giggles I'll try charging a battery overnight (I have 4 batteries). Yep, you guessed it, put it in this morning, fired it up and it did fire up. Took the battery out, put it back in, still worked. Now at least I have 1 battery but I'll try the other 3 as well.

One battery is 4 years old and the other 3 are 3 years old with the original charger but odd that they would all go at the same time.

Maybe I'm just an idiot and I had 3 dead batteries and didn't know it. Relieved though, this camera has been faultless in 4.5 years.

My battery died today after four or five pictures. I didn't think that the battery was that far from a full charge although the camera had been on while I changed some settings. Anyway, the camera went nuts and shut off. (The shutter fired four or five times and the red light was blinking.) I put a charged battery in and everything seems to work. I'm trying to charge the old battery now. (I already have the newer smaller charger.)
