jonoslack Posted February 11, 2007 Share #1 Â Posted February 11, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi There Like Mark and others, I've bought this strap - I followed the previous thread with the information about the split rings damaging the attachment points, and changed them for the wires on the normal strap - all seemed good. Â I was just slipping the camera into my bag today after a shoot, one side of the strap naturally slipped around to the back of the camera - then I noticed the nice metal screw bit on the strap about to scratch right across the LCD: Â Â Missed by a second - all is well, but I thought I should pass on this warning. Of course, one can be careful, but I can see lots of situations where you might get the strap slightly tangled - I already have a mark on the top plate which I would attribute to this stud. Â Not sure what to do with the strap, but putting it back on the camera seems like a pretty bad idea!
Stuart Richardson Posted February 11, 2007 Share #2 Â Posted February 11, 2007 You could always wrap it in black tape if you still wanted to use the strap...personally I just use Luigi's straps.
pascal_meheut Posted February 11, 2007 Share #3 Â Posted February 11, 2007 I'm using an UpStrap and this what I need: some gaffer around the metallic parts. Works fine.
sdai Posted February 11, 2007 Share #4 Â Posted February 11, 2007 You guys should lobby Hoodman to make a LCD cover like those they've made for the DSLRs.
pascal_meheut Posted February 11, 2007 Share #5 Â Posted February 11, 2007 Or put a ScreenPatronus protector on the LCD at least.
Guest WPalank Posted February 11, 2007 Share #6 Â Posted February 11, 2007 Jonos, Thanks for the heads up! I just did a wrap around with some black electrical tape. The M8 is looking very "trailer park". Actually doesn't look bad. I second the screen patronus, they are really custom made to the tee.

Jager Posted February 11, 2007 Share #8 Â Posted February 11, 2007 I've always like the Domke narrow (1") straps on my M6 and M7. When I picked up my M8 I put the same strap on and find it works perfectly. But - for the same reason that you describe, Jon - I ended up picking up a NON-QR strap for the M8. The QR (quick release) strap, the one found in most camera stores, has a metal hook (the quick release component) about 8" from where each side attaches to the camera. Not good for a camera with an LCD on the back. Â Propitously, the non-QR strap costs a few bucks less than the QR variety. Â Jeff
marknorton Posted February 11, 2007 Share #9 Â Posted February 11, 2007 I've persevered with this strap, replacing the split rings with the wires from the standard strap and using double sided tape and glue to keep things in their place but I had missed the possibility of the metal screw damaging the camera. Jono, I think you've got it set to the middle position, It's less likely to cause problems at the longest extension but I think I will look for a plastic replacement for the screw. Â I think this strap is bad news and the only worse news than that is that I've bought two of them... Overall, not worth the bother. Â I agree about the ScreenPatronus - good, though they are a consumable. The first one I put on was ruined by just running my finger nail across it - it disturbs the adhesive and you get a scuff mark.

HI Mark Well, I've gone back to the original strap - it's functional, and grips much better on my leather jacket (the leather one slips off). As for black tape etc. I didn't pay that much for a leather strap to have to make kludges to get it to be useful (and thus destroy it's looks).  I can see that it would be okay on a non digital camera, so it's tough to blame Leica - I just don't know what to do with it now! I'll point out the problem to Robert White.  I don't like using things like the screen patronus - I've been careful to make sure that jackets / bags etc don't have dodgy zips which are likely to cause damage, and the Leica LCD seems reasonably okay (there's always brasso if it gets tacky!).  thanks for all your wise observations over this one. jonoslack Posted February 11, 2007 Author Share #11  Posted February 11, 2007 Hi Everone  It seems to me to be a lot of money to spend on a strap which you then have to deface by sticking on black tape!  I might buy a Luigi strap later on, but as things stand, I reckon I'll just go back to the original strap - it may not be elegant, but it IS functional. pascal_meheut Posted February 11, 2007 Share #12 Â Posted February 11, 2007 Some of us are more concerned about the usability of our camera and less by the look of the strap.
xrogers Posted February 11, 2007 Share #13 Â Posted February 11, 2007 I've wrapped any metal strap parts in black tape since I can remember (I love those soft thin Nikon straps from the 80s, but they always had edgy metal adjusters). I haven't bothered with taping the Upstrap adjusters---I think they're metal, but they are so smooth it doesn't seem worth the trouble. I like the original Leica strap too, but wish it had the Upstrap super-sticky pad. Â Clyde Rogers
jonoslack Posted February 11, 2007 Author Share #14 Â Posted February 11, 2007 Some of us are more concerned about the usability of our camera and less by the look of the strap. C'mon Pascal - everyone who buys a Leica has a small eye on the look of it. There's certainly no good reason for spending so much on a strap, whether Luigi or Leica. Anyway, I've learned my lesson, the strap which comes with the camera works well, and now it's staying on it.
Shootist Posted February 11, 2007 Share #15 Â Posted February 11, 2007 Jono I have been using a Tamrac strap that works real well. I have 3 of them, one on 2 of my M3's and one on a R4s. Link to B&H. Tamrac N-45 Universal Quick Release Strap (Brown) Â Although I bought them locally for a bit more cost. I don't carry the camera around my neck or over my shoulder. I do have it over one shoulder, right shoulder, and then under my left arm. This way I can move the camera to the side of me or in front of me or to my back. For this type of carry you do need a longer strap so you can put the camera to your eye without having to take it off, out of, my normal carry position. The Tamrac work fine for this. As does the stock strap that comes with the M8 (Although I do have to have the straps fully extended).
reven Posted February 11, 2007 Share #16 Â Posted February 11, 2007 I don't see any problem in what. Yes it can be caused, but it never happend here and I don't think it will. I'm using the Leica wide strap now for 2 months and I love it. Sorry but wouldn't trade it for any other.
barjohn Posted February 11, 2007 Share #17 Â Posted February 11, 2007 I would be concerned about the screen and use the ScreenPatronus protectors. The only scratches I have on my screen came when carrying it on a shoulder and wearing a soft cashmere sweater which the screen brused against. After that, a screen protector. I'm not sure you can use brasso or any of the LCD polishing compounds because I think it has a coating and you will destroy the coating in the process. chris_tribble Posted February 11, 2007 Share #18 Â Posted February 11, 2007 ... but I still don't see what's wrong with the original strap! I used it for years on the M6 and M7 and was please to see exactly the same on the M8. Doesn't slip, slim enough to wrap around a fist if I'm carring the camera in the hand, right length for giving stability in slow exposures if I've got it over a shoulder or across the body ... Â Am I the only one? Â No if we were complaining about having to screw a dioptre onto the viewfinder to see what's happening with the range finder and then having to unscrew it to put on the telescopic adapter I'd be on your side... that's not user friendly design, and the dioptres are expensive! Â Heigh ho...
Shootist Posted February 11, 2007 Share #19 Â Posted February 11, 2007 No you're not the only one. I am using the stock supplied strap on my M8. The resaon I bought the others is because the cameras did not have any straps with them when I bought them. The only camera I've changed the stap on, from the one supplied, is on my Nikon D200. It was to short for my needs, over the shoulder and around the body, and I didn't care for the bold Nikon D200 logo on the strap saying "Steal Me Steal Me".
