bill Posted August 16, 2011 Share #2 Posted August 16, 2011 Welcome. I'd keep the M8 as a backup... Regards, Bill
wda Posted August 16, 2011 Share #3 Posted August 16, 2011 Robert, welcome to the Forum! I would strongly recommend keeping the X1 as backup to the M8, but only if you are absolutely happy with its performance and handling. I am. The two make a fine partnership. Holybasil Posted August 16, 2011 Share #4 Posted August 16, 2011 As much as I hate on the X100, it is the superior camera of the lot you mention (besides the M8). I'd keep that.
LichMD Posted August 16, 2011 Share #5 Posted August 16, 2011 I have the X1 as my backup and ultraportable camera. After owning it for a few months I am quite comfortable with it's performance and love the Leica IQ. I would vote for the X1 Good Luck
maccaco Posted August 16, 2011 Share #6 Posted August 16, 2011 Consider also an Oly Pen, Ricoh NEX or M-mount adapter .... It is an interesting issue (for a backup-M)
spylaw4 Posted August 17, 2011 Share #7 Posted August 17, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Keep the X-1 if you need a small camera, the Digilux 2 if size is not an issue. Personally I would keep both of those, they knock spots off the X100.
Ecaton Posted August 17, 2011 Share #8 Posted August 17, 2011 Keep the X-1 if you need a small camera, the Digilux 2 if size is not an issue. Personally I would keep both of those, they knock spots off the X100. Do they? I'm sure you own or at least have used them all;)
GLAUMAX Posted August 17, 2011 Share #9 Posted August 17, 2011 My backup camera for my M8 is a X100 and I like it alot.
tomlianza Posted August 17, 2011 Share #10 Posted August 17, 2011 I just bought the x100 and I own an M8 and M9 as well. I was going to buy a 28 or 25mm for the M8 and use it mostly in snapshot mode. I decided to buy and test the X100 which was on the order of the cost of a Zeiss lens and well below the Leica variants. I am now considering selling the M8. While the X100 has some UI issues, from the testing I have done it far outperforms the M8 in terms of ISO performance and color reproduction capabilities. The second point is very subjective of course and is strongly affected by the Raw Converter, but the raw images rendered through both lightroom and Photoshop are much better than the M8. The images with X100 at ISO 6400 are really quite good, well on par with the Nikon D3 (which I also own) and very useful. The flash system on the camera is an enigma to me. I need to take a closer look at what is going on there. In my case, it seems to always be working in "fill mode". The Autofocus on the X-100 takes some practice to use well. Autofocus on an a camera with an F2.0 lens can be very tricky. I also have a Digilux 3 and Canon G10. Neither of those two cameras are in the same league as the X100. Both the highlight and shadow range of capture is better with the X100. It has considerable highlight headroom. The X100 is a fine example of a state of the art camera. Stateowned Posted August 18, 2011 Share #12 Posted August 18, 2011 i dont really like the "cheap" feel of the x100, im sure it performs well but i rather take my x1 over the x100 any day. and im buying an m8 soon.
Ronan Posted August 18, 2011 Share #13 Posted August 18, 2011 X100, it's superior in IQ and Ergonomics. Search around, people compared the x100 and it comes on top.
spylaw4 Posted August 18, 2011 Share #14 Posted August 18, 2011 As the OP is (I hope) by now all too aware, there is, and aways will be, a considerable divergence of opinion, which is what usually happens when a question such as the OP's is asked on the Forum. Everyone's MMV, which rather really negates the whole exercise! Simply saying "people compared" means IMO absolutely nothing, unless the peoples' names are quoted and links provided for verification and assessment as to the qualifications of the alleged reviewer(s). {So in my earlier post (#11) I should have stated that "in my experience" or words to that effect - apologies, speed was of the essence at the time}
Big T Posted August 20, 2011 Share #15 Posted August 20, 2011 I have the M8.2 and the X100 and love them both....... My vote is to keep the X100...... Main reasons is the OVF and Hi ISO performance. Awesome... (Personal view only....)
framestore Posted September 13, 2011 Share #16 Posted September 13, 2011 I would keep X1 for backing up M8.
Thomv Posted September 13, 2011 Share #17 Posted September 13, 2011 I would keep X1 for backing up M8. I have a Canon 550D as a backup, with several L lenses. This provides a true (almost industrial) back-up, i.e. different hardware and software from a different manufacturer. And it is nice to still have the possibilities of a DSLR such as a T/S lens. I don't like the photoshop 'solution' for such corrections. A highly recommended approach!
ramosa Posted September 14, 2011 Share #18 Posted September 14, 2011 I would keep the X100. That would be my choice as a compliment/backup for an M8 or M9.
framestore Posted September 16, 2011 Share #19 Posted September 16, 2011 If anyone interested in Full comparison of two, X100 vs X1 See here by Steve Huff Most of us will not notify of any differences at all. Enjoy!!
framestore Posted September 16, 2011 Share #20 Posted September 16, 2011 Keep the X-1 if you need a small camera, the Digilux 2 if size is not an issue. Personally I would keep both of those, they knock spots off the X100. I also personally will keep the X1 due to the brands name since I have Leica M, but I would not agree that X1 knock spots off the X100. There are no differences in photo quality or color rendering. After I read this comparison reviews, I actually preferred X100 over X1. Enjoy!!
