Hello,

I have an opportunity to buy this camera along with the lenses it comes with. The problem is that I am not very familiar with older Leica equipment and am not sure what these lenses and camera are worth. Im not even sure what lenses these are. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

The camera is, says my eyes and the serial number, a Leica IIIc of the post-war type, made in 1948-49. The 5cm lens does look like a v.1 (collapsible) Summicron, but the serial # 701106 points to 1949. So it should be a Summitar lens. It would be quite strange if the engraving on the front ring says "Summicron".

A nice camera, but there were still difficulties with the supply of materials, and the chrome of that time was usually substandard, which I think the picture shows.

The long lens was of course made by what became Minolta, and is obviously a very early one, as attested by the low serial no.! The gear may have been acquired by some U.S. serviceman who was posted both to Germany and to Japan. Check if the lens bears somewhere the engraving that shows that it was sold by the Armed Forces Post Exchange (PX) system. This is the letters 'EP' within a diamond frame. But the absence of it proves nothing ("the absence of evidence is not evidence of absence").
