marknorton Posted August 17, 2011 Share #41 Posted August 17, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) I agree, I use Heavystar hoods with my 28mm Summicron and first version 35mm Summilux ASPH. IMHO, a hood needs to protect the front of the lens when in the bag with a lens hood which, for example, the petal hoods do not.

I use a lens cap with my petal hood. It clips inside the hood. Fiddly to get out if you don't have a filter. Cheers John
marknorton Posted August 17, 2011 Share #43 Posted August 17, 2011 As you say, a fiddle. If you clip the lens cap into the front of a petal hood, the lens is only partially protected. I like the 28mm hood but not the price.
Ozkar Posted August 18, 2011 Share #44 Posted August 18, 2011 I'm really only concerned with flare. I am temped to buy this lens but the brutish hood(s) relative to lenses like the 28/2.8 ASPH or 35/2 ASPH put me off. If it is not flare prone, I would much prefer to shoot without a hood. I guess I'm in the habit of using them with all my lenses. For flare, and to protect the front element.

That is why I switched to the more discrete round metal hoods on those lenses, and ditched the big square plastic ones.
