I agree, I use Heavystar hoods with my 28mm Summicron and first version 35mm Summilux ASPH. IMHO, a hood needs to protect the front of the lens when in the bag with a lens hood which, for example, the petal hoods do not.

 

Sorry Mark - I don't understand. Did you mean to say with a lens cap?

 

I use a lens cap with my petal hood. It clips inside the hood. Fiddly to get out if you don't have a filter.

I'm really only concerned with flare. I am temped to buy this lens but the brutish hood(s) relative to lenses like the 28/2.8 ASPH or 35/2 ASPH put me off. If it is not flare prone, I would much prefer to shoot without a hood.

 

 

I guess I'm in the habit of using them with all my lenses. For flare, and to protect the front element.

That is why I switched to the more discrete round metal hoods on those lenses, and ditched the big square plastic ones.
