Hug Posted August 8, 2011 Share #21 Posted August 8, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Bocaburger's response is both hilarious and accurate. Sling the camera over your shoulder and stuff a lens in your pocket. Then you are more likely to take pictures with it.

muddyT Posted August 9, 2011 Share #24 Posted August 9, 2011 I bought one of this bag from E-Bay, it's a Dark Green French army surplus bag from '60 '70, nice genuine leather lining and leather strap, but you need to soften the leather with leather care before use( I use Connolly hide Care) adding an dividing insert it should be good for M9+Lenses.Genuine French Army Bag Leather Lined and Unique - NEW | eBay
4X5B&W Posted August 9, 2011 Share #25 Posted August 9, 2011 Another vote for the Think Tank Retrospective 5, my first new bag purchase in twenty years. Just love the design for a compact kit. The perfect kit, a M and two lenses.
Bo_Lorentzen Posted August 9, 2011 Share #26 Posted August 9, 2011 +1 for bocaburger... again today. Guess the real important question is M9 or M9p I mean that could change the bag choices a lot. I have the think tank retro 5, it is great but a bit more pregnant than required. works well with a padded insert for a M + 2 loose lenses. As a alternative I just ordered one of the new crumblers with the camera insert Local Identity (S) - Photo My M's keep getting scratched up, because I tend to hang them on my shoulder.... method is not really recommended due to risk of damage to the camera... but it helps in taking pictures. . bocaburger Posted August 9, 2011 Share #27 Posted August 9, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) But the Retrospective just looks like a tatty satchel, whereas a Billingham might as well come with a matching photo vest and an illuminated sign.......And if your thief is riding a tube train with 15 guys on it that all have bags, do you think as first choice he'll go for the scruffy one? I think he'll go for whatever bag is being held by the guy whose body language telegraphs the fact he's carrying something valuable. Or perhaps also, the guy who looks like he's the least able to put up a successful fight, or give chase. I give career thieves credit for being as expert at their chosen profession as any of us are at our own. As many times as I've seen using a scruffy bag to fool thieves discussed on camera forums, I suspect it isn't our little ingenious secret any more
Lord Fluff Posted August 10, 2011 Share #28 Posted August 10, 2011 Not every thief is a 'career thief' mind you. And I fail to see how a bag which advertises its contents is anything of a deterrent, whereas one which attempts to disguise it might be. Not to mention that it's just nice being able to carry posh gear around without looking like I'm showing off all the time.
bocaburger Posted August 10, 2011 Share #29 Posted August 10, 2011 Not to mention that it's just nice being able to carry posh gear around without looking like I'm showing off all the time. I agree with you. It makes perfect sense that being preoccupied by feelings of self-consciousness about one's camera bag could have an effect on the photographer... much more so than on a thief. Keith (M) Posted August 10, 2011 Share #30 Posted August 10, 2011 So, a bag for an M9 and two lenses? Something that is small, well-padded, robust, of good materials, has a rain-cover tucked away under a flap, has a top lid that opens away from the body, has a full-width pocket under the front flap that has loops for memory-card, battery etc (and for M7 etc users, for film canisters too) and of discrete appearance. Oh, and comes with a detachable pod (not shown in the photos below) that can take another body and/or selection of lenses. And this paragon of virtue is? At the risk of being drummed-out of the forum for not choosing something well into three figures price-wise, here it is:- Welcome, dear visitor! menos I M6 Posted August 10, 2011 Share #31 Posted August 10, 2011 Keith, thanks for the bag pics! I now realize, that LowePro and Samsonite lets the same Chinese bag manufacturer rebrand their bags (or is LowePro and Samsonite under the same roof corporate wise?). Same design, same attachments, same strap, same connectors, same flap, same grip, same net with zipper, same same, but different ;-) This is not to redicule the Samsonite bag, but to remind you guys, that these very bags are sold for less than 25% of retail of the exact same branded items in western camera shops (if we are talking 50 USD retail here, that is) ;-)

As to the price, normal retail in the UK is circa GBP69.00 but the supplier on Amazon UK is selling-off his stock at a mere GBP18.48! roydonian Posted August 10, 2011 Share #33 Posted August 10, 2011 Another big plus is that and it also doesnt shout BAG OF CAMERA GEAR like Billinghams do (as good as they are). I'd assumed that to the layman my khaki Billingham bag looks like something I'd bought down the army surplus store. Ever since I was a 12 year old (circa 1955), I've used an old army-surplus bag to carry stuff like books, flask of coffee, sandwiches, spectacles, pen, comb, and all the other impedimenta of daily life. They were so cheap that when one bcame grubby, I threw it away and bought another. When I became interested in photography, and the novelty of carrying a shiny new ERC wore off, into the bag the camera went. By the early 1970s, there was am M2 and second lens in that bag, and by the 1990s a Leicaflex and several lenses. Then in 1999 my wife bought me a Domke for Xmas, and the army-surplus bag was retired. For the first time in my life I had a 'proper' camera bag, but I insisted on having the khaki version. When the Domke became shabby a few years ago, I switched to a Billingham. But I still think of the latter as the descendant of my army-surplus bag, and have always assumed that's how the world would see it - as the bag I carry my stuff around in. Much less of an inviting target than the natty laptop bags carried by business types. Best regards, Doug
