are you referring to the discontinued (but still available) model or the promised one? if you mean the discontinued one, there are reviews out there. check out cameraquest for some pointers. and let us know if you buy one and how you like it. i do keep looking at it, but it seems so large compared to my bargain basement 35mm summicron...

Tony, so far, there has never been a new 35/1.2 Voigtlander sample up for review or even for sale.

The lens has been announced after discontinuation of the version 1 (which has been and still is an excellent lens + a bargain at this performance to boot).

The current status still stands as "available in Feb" on the official US reseller's site (which year though is not clarified ;-) ).

If you want to shoot a fast, very good 35mm Today, you either have to find a 35 Summilux or get a version 1 35/1.2 CV lens.

Mint copies sell for about 900 − 950 USD.

Old new stock still sells for about 1000 − 1200 USD.

There are early versions of the version 1 lens, which have to be modified, to fit digital Leicas. If you buy a second hand lens, this is a optional modification at cost (something around 100 USD, I remember).

If you buy from an authorized Voigtlander reseller, you might get the modification for free, should you happen, to get an early version (unlikely in 2011).

I bought a like new second hand sample from the US, but use it almost not at all, as I prefer the ergonomics of the 35 Lux ASPH. A pre ASPH 35 Lux is waiting for pickup and I am very curious, if this really is MY 35mm, as people, who use this love it for being much closer to classic spherical lenses than the modern, pinsharp Leica glass.

Many thanks Menos for such a detailed reply - I would be reluctant to place an order for the new version as often CV replacement lenses can be inferior to the one being replaced. I am tempted by the discontinued lens but have never really seen an image that 'blows me away'. If anyone on this forum knows such an image taken with an M9 I would be grateful

Tony

Tony,

Peter aka "Prosphos" has a very interesting style od shooting personal, intimate images with an M9 and recently a 35 1.2.

Search for him especially on DPR. He also has a nice website, which is updated often.

Here is one more technical image, he posted, after having the lens new, which rather impressed me, showing it's potential for night time shooting:

For me, the 35/1.2 CV is optically the nicer 35 Lux ASPH.

Handling wise though, it is bigger, heavier and much less smooth to operate than any well maintained 35mm Summilux.

It's half stop light advantage is real, not just bragging rights over the f1.4 Lux.

It is possibly the best made Voigtlander lens regarding fit and finish - nothing rattles, not play, it feels absolutely solid and has an overall very high quality of manufacturing.

It has a rather quick focussing for it's speed and minimum focus though, paired with a rather tight (stiff but smooth, when run in) focus ring, paired with the lack of a focus tab, which I find essential, to have with this focal length.

Chances are, that this is one of the rare Cosina made Voigtlander lenses, one will not dump money on, even after introduction of a follow up lens.

You can't make much wrong getting one (especially a late, nice mint second hand copy).

Hi Dirk,

Thanks for the kind words, dear friend.

I checked out your link to my own site and realized I haven't posted many shots with this fine lens!

Currently, I'm posting a run of shots taken with the Nikkor (Nikon) NOCT 58/1.2. Next week, I'll post more images taken with the Voigtlander 35/1.2 - it's an amazing lens that deserves to be highlighted.

Thanks again,

Peter.

I've been slammed on this forum before for saying that the Nokton 35/1.2 has a more pleasing rendering than the Summilux ASPH, V.1 and V.2, but I won't say it again ;)

BTW, the new V.2 Nokton is due by the end of this month. I am first on the US list and will be posting as soon as I have it in hand....probably not on this forum though.

Re: the 35/1.2 rendering, I completely agree with you.

Thank you Peter for the kind words ;-)

I am following your blog silently - great things, you do with those fast lenses!

Standard practice around this place ;-)

Now imagine the glass of the 35/1.2 v1 in a body, as smooth, easy to use and made like the 35 Lux ASPH :):):) I would instantly buy it.

I use my 35/1.2 not at all, as for the very different handling, opposed to the sweet Leica Lux.

I'm quite excited to seeing what they have improved.

I would wait, until the lens is delivered. I am not very fond of that new chrome front bayonet, but it will make due with the former outdated set screw hood attachment, which is not very practical.

From what I gather from the internet, the reason to issue the new version is that sone of the glass used in the old one is no longer available. I would be more concerned that the new version might not be as good as the original. Time will tell; I already have a copy of the first version so I'm all set.

I just posted some sample images. Remember, this is meant to be a brief discussion and not a comprehensive review! I'm a shooter not a reviewer!
