Hi guys

Recently I've decided to trade my Cron 35 asph 6bit in mint condition for a Cron 28 asph.

I need a wide angle with a Leica feel and to me 35 is nice but clinical.

I found the Summicron 28 and I'm close of making the trade which requires me to dish out some extra $

At the same time I found a LNIB Leica Mp black

I used to have one some time ago and I had to trade it for my M9. I still miss it.

I can't decide what should I do. The cash difference is the same in both situations.

I have a 50 cron 6 bit and a 90 Elmarit. A 28 will be the full house.

At the same time a MP will be a great backup camera in case I get into weeding photography. Part of me wants the MP part wants the 28.

Some ideas will be appreciated.

Well, I have the 28 ASPH and it is a great lens. Loved it on the M8, and even though I find it a bit wide, it has the same character on the M9. I am actually wanting a 35 with the same character!

In the end only YOU can know if you want a second, backup body - alas film - or another lens in a focal lenth that compliments you current array.

The 28 ASPH will still fit the MP you may buy later ... but if you trade the 35 for the MP you have less lenses, and a backup body you may hardly use.

I'd go for the lens, but then I am not a professional, nor do I use film anymore.

I recommend having 3 or 4 or more cameras for weddings, just in case of accident, theft, malfunction, etc. Even if the M9 is your main camera, you should still have a few backups, which can be any cameras with which you're comfortable shooting an entire wedding (rangefinders, DSLRs, etc.). But a film camera is only good as a backup if you bring enough fresh film to every wedding to photograph the entire wedding. Also, a 35mm lens is very useful for weddings, so I'm not sure I would trade that away.

If you do get into wedding photography, you'll buy whatever you need for the job. Until then, don't worry too much about gear decisions "in case I get into wedding photography". Good luck!

Thanks

Valid points. I should have said instead of "in case I'll go into weedding" , "I'm planning of going ". Maybe this fall with some luck.

Thanks for advice.

I'm keep hearing about this "leica look" on Summicron 28. Can someone give me more details about the lens output. Sharpness, bokeh, etc . I can't find to many samples online.

I have both of those lenses and the 28 Cron is flat out one of the best lenses in the Leica line up. I am not such a big fan of the 35 Cron, but I have it as a compact 35.

Next, never sell Leica glass.

Finally, never become a wedding photographer. There is no harder or more competitive job in photography. And, the MP will not be a great back up camera to digital for weddings unless you sell yourself as the artsy-fartsy kind of wedding photographer up front and plan to shoot some film at weddings.

The Cron 28 Asph is a nice lens but I did sell it and do not regret, principally because the sample I had (bought second hand) produced fairly strong red edge on my M9. I then got the Cron 35 Asph which is now my favorite lens, plus a 24 Elmarit Asph which, surprisingly, so far does not seem to produce red edge on my M9. I found the 28 mm focal length ideal on the M8 but to me at least, it is neither here nor there on the M9 and I find 35 mm far more useful and the 24 mm more dramatic when I want the wide-angle perspective. I would skip the MP and perhaps buy a used 24 using the money you save.

The 28 asph renders very similarly to the 35 asph, so they would both be "too clinical" if you subscribe to that view - but I actually prefer the sharp and contrasty rendering of the "clinical" asph Crons, over the "dreamy" rendering of the Summiluxes and some of the older lenses, so I would keep the 35 Cron asph in your situation.

Well, if you want a backup to the M9 + 35 Summicron asph, you could always opt for an M8 with the 28 Summicron asph. Roughly same FOV, and the only issue would be keeping a filter on the M8 lens. The M8 wouldn't be a huge expense.

I still have my 35 Summicron asph from my film days. But when I switched to the M8.2, I bought the 28 Summicron asph. I much prefer the 28...so much so that it's one reason I'm reluctant to move to an M9 (with the subsequent likely move back to the 35).

Thank you all.

The MP is out of the question now. You were wright

But I will go for the 35-28 trade as the wide angle is much more suited for what I need and is more dramatic then 35. Since I've first posted this question another 28 lens apear.

So for the trade I can chosse betwen these 2

1. 28 Summicron asph 2001 6 bit marked with sharpie with a play on the ring that holds the hood. The lens just came from a reputable Leica authorized repair service. The ring play fixed. No box or papers Leather pouch 3 caps and hood.

2. A 2007 Summicron asph REAL 6 bit with a minor play of the ring (1mm) leather pouch missing roun front cap. Has box ,papers, 2caps hood.

So is almost complete except for the round cap.

Should I go for the secobd one without the round cap and 6 bit or for the first with no box, older but with no play and all the caps?

As a resale value , later on, is it important to have the box?

Also the second is newer Is this ring play so important?

Anyone has a problem like this on their lens?

Also the first one comes from my dealer that I trust and he sold me good stuff along the years.

Thanks

You can never be too rich, too thin, or have too many Leica lenses. Since you have to

add cash to whatever you trade, keep the cash, save some more and buy the 28. Unless

you are a low light fanatic, consider the 28 elmarit which is an underrated "price performer"

(if you can imagine any Leica lens as a price performer). Personally with your 35/50/90

combination, I would consider a 24 since for me the 28/35 differentiation is minor.

In many ways Leica lenses are like favorite old cars, they get better with time and you

always regret selling them later.
