philipus Posted July 20, 2011 Share #1 Posted July 20, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi everyone I have a few older cameras which I collect and I am considering collecting Leica too. I am wondering how other collectors store their collections to ensure they don't degrade. Feel free to share experiences. Kind regards Philip

greyelm Posted July 20, 2011 Share #2 Posted July 20, 2011 As Andy says and if you intend to ever use them in the future just exercise the shutters by firing of at different speeds periodically ( three or four times a year).
jc_braconi Posted July 21, 2011 Share #3 Posted July 21, 2011 It depends of the size of your collection... Can be a special room with temperature and hygrometry controlled, like for wines.
philipus Posted July 21, 2011 Author Share #4 Posted July 21, 2011 Thank you very much. Then my cameras will be fine. I do run a few rolls through them every year and also keep them out of direct sun light. cheers philip
SJP Posted July 21, 2011 Share #5 Posted July 21, 2011 in The Hague as well:D Stuffed in a bag and drawer/photocase for my Nikon FM2 & F3 (these are rarely used I'm afraid). The main/only problem is light - living close to the sea the UV is quite deadly.
awslee Posted August 27, 2011 Share #6 Posted August 27, 2011 Depending on where you live, the lens may need to be sun bathed to avoid fungus and mold
pico Posted August 27, 2011 Share #7 Posted August 27, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Keep the equipment in a room with a dehumidifier. We have storage kept at about 50% humidity, and about 70F. Still nothing is perfect so you still should exercise the equipment every now and then to keep the lubricants distributed. Is your stuff really worth that much?
FiZZ Posted August 27, 2011 Share #8 Posted August 27, 2011 I put them in a box with silica gel bags. Once I settle down I'm planning on getting a glass case, and still use the silica gel. So far they've worked fine. every once in a while I go out and put my lenses in the sun for a while. I read somewhere that UV light helps kill fungus. Ronan Posted August 27, 2011 Share #9 Posted August 27, 2011 My watch & camera collection (the rarer pieces) are kept in my Banks vault in NY. The less expensive stuff is kept under glass (except for the watches, they are kept in a mini vault thingy).
