innerimager Posted February 9, 2007 Share #1 Â Posted February 9, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Excuse the off topic nature of this...but it seems there are a few Amsterdam citizens on this forum. My wife and I are coming for vacation in mid May, our first time. It's hard to pick a hotel from literature, recommendations would be appreciated. We are prepared to pamper ourselves, but are not dedicated to this! We are thinking old city location, but are open to suggestions from folks that have actually seen these places. Thanks....Peter
mitchell Posted February 9, 2007 Share #2 Â Posted February 9, 2007 I have stayed at The Canal House three times. Great! Â Charming building. great location. Terrific staff. But, no TVs. If you want that sort of thing you'll be dissapointed. Â Best, Â Mitchell

innerimager Posted February 9, 2007 Author Share #5 Â Posted February 9, 2007 thanks all. We were already tempted by both the Canal House and the Pulitzer so we're on the right track! I'll check out the city garden as well. best...Peter
MJLogan Posted February 9, 2007 Share #6 Â Posted February 9, 2007 Similar to the Pulitzer, and just around the corner, is the Ambassade. It's a bit less expensive, I think. I'll be there in a few weeks myself. Â I've stayed there many times over the last 20 years or so, and never been disappointed.

Hans Roggen Posted February 9, 2007 Share #8  Posted February 9, 2007 Be sure to visit the wonderful old city of Utrecht. It's only a 30 mins drive from Amsterdam   Hans
wstotler Posted February 9, 2007 Share #9 Â Posted February 9, 2007 Be sure to visit the wonderful old city of Utrecht. Â I concur. Utrecht is worth at least a day, if not two and one night. Rietveld House, Centraal Museum (w/Dick Bruna exhibit), Dom Tower, National Train Museum, charming shopping district just down from the train station, good restaurants down on the canal, etc., etc. 40 mins. by train (tops) from Centraal Station Amsterdam. Good for a breather if Amsterdam gets a bit seedy or busy for you. (Utrecht is my favorite Dutch city--when we visit the Netherlands we stay there and take daytrips by train across the country.) peterv Posted February 9, 2007 Share #10  Posted February 9, 2007 Peter,  if your interested in a more special/artistic place to stay:  http://www.lloydhotel.com/  5-10 minutes to centre by tram or bus, quite neighbourhood in the docklands area. I live closeby.  Anyway, if you feel like meeting another M8-user, PM me for a private city tour  Peter
mitchell Posted February 9, 2007 Share #11 Â Posted February 9, 2007 The trains are great. I stayed at the Canal House in Nov. Walked to the train station. Rode very comfortably to Maastricht. Walked to Foto Rembrandt. Picked up my preordered M8. Took the train back to Amsterdam while reading the manual, and charging the M8 battery in the outlet that comes with each seat. Ready to shoot when I got off the train. Â Best, Â Mitchell
JeffreyTotaro Posted February 9, 2007 Share #12 Â Posted February 9, 2007 Intercontinental Amstel is excellent. A bit out of the way, but in May you'll enjoy walking around anyway. We walked everywhere from there even in January. I stayed there when I went to the Cambo factory.
Peter41951 Posted February 9, 2007 Share #13  Posted February 9, 2007 Do visit the August Sander exhibition of portraits  Foam_Fotografiemuseum Amsterdam » Nederlands » Foam_tentoonstellingen » Straks  I've just returned from a visit; Eurostar put me up at the Carlton which is pleasant and central. Do look at The Park:  You are welcome on the page of the parkhotel Amsterdam  a fine old hotel where I stayed a long time ago!
innerimager Posted February 9, 2007 Author Share #14 Â Posted February 9, 2007 Thanks again everyone. All the museum/gallery recommendations duly noted and Utrecht will get a day trip at least. Thanks for the offer to get together, Peter. I think it would be great to meet up with any M8 shooters that may be inclined. I'll post a reminder in May before coming there. As to hotel, we are using AmEx points to cover the trip, ("you see dear, all the camera and lens purchases were for your benefit"), and the Pulitzer allows this, the others don't, so that seems to settle the matter! best....Peter
