Hi Emma

I have owned the Color Skopar and do own the Heliar and two other special edition screwmount lenses which work well on these cameras. It really comes down to what you want to pay.

The VC Colour Skopar is light, performs adequately and fits very naturally on any LTM camera and might be a good starting point.

I think it is generally accepted that either of the Heliars are excellent performers and again look quite natural on the camera.

Leica has made three outstanding modern lenses for use on LTM cameras, which were made as special editions to celebrate the millennium and come as a 50mm f2 Summicron, a 50mm f1.4 Summilux and a 35mm f2 Summicron ASPH.

The three Leica lenses are modified versions of the equivalent M lenses and are for me superb performers and have the benefit that they are a very natural fit, via an adapter, to any of the M series cameras and are ideal on the new M8 and M9.

The one drawback is that the beautiful 50 'Lux is quite large and heavy when attached to a LTM camera but the 35 'Cron seems to me to sit quite comfortably on the camera, though it's a little heavy. I've never felt I needed to own the 50 'cron but have handled and tried one on several occasions and I would think this would settle down pretty well onto the LTM camera, too.

Hi Emma

The f/2.5 is an ok lens unless you use slow film or an M9 together with a heavy tripod. You wont detect any difference otherwise.

I use the f/2.5 interchangably with type IV Summicron or post '94 f2.8 Elmar on M cameras without noticing any difference... Apart from it takes up less space in gbag.

2nd hand you have to pay x2 the AUS $ for either Helier, cause they are a cult (sexy) lens, little to do with performance...

The modern LTM Leica lenses are low volume collectors and not suitable for those who dont own a gold mine.

The f2.5 CV CS was low volume cause it did not sell well, and its owners dont often sell cause it is so good. Cosina build their lenses on demand in small batches. They may still be some new old stock, but a 2nd hand should be ok if is not scratched badly.

If the hood seems tight, then it is not tight, it is removed by pushing on the lens cap & unscrewing the lens cap, if you force it in panic it will lock on the lens, cause you will distort it.

The Summar may be ok when used with a hood, used one for years, (on a IIf) but some will be fogged and need internal cleaning or may even need hard coating, which would be risky...

Make a paper mache hood to push fit over lens paint with matt black paint or use black flock paper liner.
