Anyone use a Luigi case for their Leica?

Another vote for Luigi's cases.

I have 2 for my M8's, one with the removable panel in black and the other a gorgeous weathered brown with the LCD flap. As mentioned by others, one of the advantages of the beautifully crafted cases is that people often remark on your 'old fashioned' camera which suits me just fine....

Which one do you like better? With removable or hanging flap? I'm considering a Luigi half-case for my M8. Does the removable flap add extra thickness to the camera in comparison to the hanging flap? Or is there no difference?

Since I posted here last time I have acquired two Luigi cases, one half-case, without grip, and one full, ditto. Both have hanging rear flaps. The full one has a modification I asked for -- the front is permanently attached, like on 1930--1940's eveready cases. These cases were always on my M8, and are now always on my M9.

Those who think a Luigi half-case is silly because it does not protect the top, have got it all wrong. It is not the top I want protected -- it's the rear, with the screen. (The Leica 'protector' does not protect that, which is why THIS is useless.) Now I can wear the camera around my neck without worrying about shirt buttons or parka zippers. The full case is for the times I want to go out with just the camera and one lens, which is often, and the weather looks suspicious, which is even more often over here. An extra battery and card rides in a small belt case (not Luigi, standard Hama).

A full case is of course 'obsolete'. So are well-kept cameras. Obsolete photographers, like Robert Capa, did use cases however. Maybe they knew something.

Just bought this half case for my M9 (which I've not yet received). Quality is excellent and strap attaches to the body, not the case, which matters to me. Wonderful fellow to deal with.

If you want protection for the bits that really needs protection -- primarily the rear controls and screen -- then you do open the flap only occasionally, and then you close it again. A removeable flap complicates this. The hanging type is recommended.

You can get full cases with (a) flap attached to front, (B) removeable flap, and © hanging flap. (a) means that you shouldn't wear the camera with the case open, because then the rear is unprotected. (B) is discussed above. Again, © is the way to go.

I loved my Luigi case until I took it off and used my M9 "bare" with a 35mm summicron. I rediscovered the feeling of holding a Leica M. I think my Luigi will be transport dress for a while.

Still think they're great products though - I guess it just made the camera a bit too big in my hand. (Plus taking it off to change batteries, which is so much more frequent with the M9, is a pain...)

For protection reasons I use three Luigi halfcases for M bodies with the new motor M attached. I have

rebuilt the halfcases so I can attach the camera to a tripod without taking of the halfcase. Likewise the

camerastraps hold the halfcase and not the camera anymore because the camera is fixed to the halfcase

by the tripod adaptor. The halfcases make the M bodies a bit more bulky but at the same time the

handling becomes much better, especially if you have large hands like I have. Changing film is not a

real pain, just a bit more timeconsuming, no big deal. But the protection is great, I do a lot of hiking

and the halfcases have already saved me some dents or presumably more on my bodies.

Nothing is perfect, but I would never go out without those...

i have a m8 with a luigi-case.

the long-nose version (removable) and a hanging flap on the back. the nose is just big enough, that i can use it with my longest lenses (WATE and Noctilux) - they fit. if the weather is fine, i leave the nose at home, and just use it as a half-case. if i leave the nose on, the whole thing is just solid. very well protected.

i am very very happy with the luigi-case!
