Yes, remove it. It's ridiculous that Leica do not put this label on the inside, behind the removable base plate. You can buy label removing solvent from the likes of Staples which is much less aggressive than other solvents recommended here - forum members have a particular fondness for acetone.

Or just use olive oil ;-)

These CE type labels need to be visible on the product for compliance with international regulations reasons, not hidden inside the product. That's why they are on the outside.

At least the camera isn't covered in gold and green stickers all over the front, like some others I could mention...

My M9 has a new baseplate, so I can't see the relevance of the sticker anymore! It can't relate to the camera because it didn't come with it.

When I was a kid I went to the seaside and my parents bought me a Rubber Duck. They told me that if I left the Cardboard label round it's neck, it wouldn't float away. At the time it made sense (can't remember why).

My point ? It's only a bleeding sticker for crying out loud !!! Unless I'm missing something of course ???

Toilet cleaning agent also works fine & doesn't damage the paint. It might dissolve your finger though.

Yes, but it does kill 99.9% of all known germs and leaves a lovely fresh scent of wild summer meadows (strangely, if you stand in the middle of a summer meadow it doesn't smell of toilet cleaner).

Remember those tags on furniture sold the U.S. from the 1950s and 60s, which said "Do not remove this tag under penalty of law."? When we were kids, we thought we'd be arrested if we tore the tag off.

I left the film on my beseplare of my M8 figuring it would protect the finish from scratching if the camera is put down on a rough surface. Was this a mistake? I get the impression from some of you that leaving it on a long time will result in finish damage if it is then removed. Is that the case?

So, can you imagine Leica deliberately putting something on your camera that you later sue them for because it damaged the camera?

I don't think so!

Now imagine stickers or protection films on these cameras … no thanks:

Just use a little GooGone from HomePro ;)

I couldn't find it, but there is a thread with a picture of the shadow left by a label--it didn't look good. I think I will still try to get my (very old) label off.

Interesting comments. Personally I admire the beautiful design of the Leica. When I am showing my camera to a friend and explaining the history of Leica, it only detracts from the ascetics of the finely crafted instrument if there is some ugly as shit sticker on the base. For those that would suggest that is being pedantic I would argue that in leaving it on to avoid a bit of wear, that is in itself pedantic. I don't care if the Leica looks worn, in fact it adds character which I prefer over some ugly department store type label. Leica should attach a sticker like they do to the body cap, easily removed. Those base stickers are akin to vandalism.

Why ? Don't you enjoy sharing information about subjects that you find interesting. The same reason that in mid life in am doing a journalism & photography degree. Interest in learning and sharing. Taking photos is how I make a living, but as it happens, I also find many aspects of it fascinating, particularly the history of photography, cameras of all makes. Don't you ?

Studio 58, in reference to your comment about 'leaving the sticker on to avoid wear', I think is a misreading of the original comment (somewhere above). That reference is to the plastic film covering the entire base. It does protect the base from scratching, it you wish to protect it, but of course, the ugly sticker is under it so then cannot be removed. Catch 22!

As far as sharing and showing your camera to friends, well I can understand that tidying the bottom before showing it is important. After all, it is a favourite male sport, looking at bottoms! ;)

Depends, there are plenty of things I find interesting that few others do/will. Re. Leica I just like to use the thing & not discuss all the salient details with friends. For me it would be a bit like discussing the injection system of an Alfa Romeo diesel engine, not high on my list of priorities for discussion while being very interesting (to me).
