I was going to upgrade my 90mm Elmarit to the Summicron APO (B&H has had 2 in stock over the past month). I changed my mind when I had a chance to play with one against the elmarit. It is MUCH bigger and heavier than the Elmarit and you would be very hard pressed to tell the difference between them in pictures from 2.8 onwards. Unless you need the extra stop, save yourself about $2000 and get get a second hand Elmarit (Camera West has a used one in stock).

I do have an Elmarit 90 and I'm more than happy with it.

In regards of the Summarit I will stay away from it not that is optically inferior but because of the resale value. You will lose money big time in case you want to trade in or upgrade later on. The elmarit keeps it's value much better.

It's too early to tell how the value of the Summarit 90 will hold up over time. So far, I don't see a lot of cheap used ones on the market. There are several listed on eBay right now at higher prices than new...

I bought a Mint Summarit-90 and sold it a couple of years later, in a similar condition, for the same amount as I paid for it. I have sold plenty of other lenses where I have lost money on them.

I only sold it because I rarely use a 90 on an M, but there was nothing at all wrong with it optically.

I'd also consider a Cron 90/2 Pre-ASPH. I believe there's one for sale on the B&S section.

More classic and less clinically sharp than the APO up to f/4 - hard to tell apart at f/5.6. The APO must also be better corrected for aberrations, although I haven't seen any major issue in practical use with my Pre-ASPH.

Only because good specimens are in shorter supply than the equivalent Summarit lens.
