Hi all,

Not but a few hours ago... I posted on another thread about watching the OP make the transition from an X1 to an M8. I suggested that I was on the "razor's edge" between the two and was looking forward to see how he gets along.

I am an impatient sort.

My new-to-me M8 will be here tomorrow!

Hi,

Thanks for the welcome to the M8 world!

Re: lenses... well that was really the decision maker. I felt as though the fixed lens of the X1 may have limited me. I have a 50 LUX V2 that I use w/ my M6C as well as 35/50/90/135 LTM's that I use with my IIIc/f. After seeing the thread here about the digital M's using old glass - I just had to try!

I would like to source quality adapters for at least the 35 and 90 LTM's and that will likely be the next purchase after a UV/IR cut filter - though I expect 90% of my work will be B/W.

I feel like a kid on Xmas Eve! Probably won't get much sleep tonight!

Welcome to the forum!

I've only been using the M8 for a couple of days but i love it!

Regarding the LTM to M mount adapter: I've read some interesting things about the Voigtländer adapter and it's quality. I haven't done any in depth investigation about different quality though.

Regards,

Joël

All,

Almost a week in and I frankly have not had much time to spend with it. I hope to get out this weekend!

So far, I love it. As much as I love film - I must admit to feeling a bit of liberation!

I have baselined the camera to the factory default settings and installed the latest firmware. For now, I am shooting completely AUTO and just trying to get a feel for the camera. I love the simplicity of the handling and I love the simple menu structure and navigation of the screen. My initial impressions are that we will get along just fine.

I find the thickness of the body to be the biggest difference/obstacle so far compared to my M6. I have tried it with the Thumbs Up EP1 and frankly, I think I like it better without. I am also experimenting with a BUG soft release and the verdict is still out on that.

At this point, I think I am leaning towards leaving the camera bare without any accessories and perhaps just add a halfcase. The camera simply feels more right in my hands that way versus the M6 with the EP1 and a grip - both of which I think it needs.

Remarkably, even with the .68x - I seem to find the camera easier to focus than my .72x M6 with the MP optics upgrade! My vision is a mess, so only time will tell if that observation holds true. I need to move to contacts, I think, or figure out how to get one of those variable diopter magnifiers into the states!

I have been shooting in COLOR DNG+JPG (fine) and converting some to B/W using HLS conversion in Photoshop Elements. I have been pleasantly surprised that the COLOR, while not perfect - is not too bad, filterless. With that said, I have bought a Leica E43 UV/IR cut filter that I awaiting delivery on. I am looking forward to see how things look after using it.

I also purchased (awaiting these too) Voigtlander LTM adapters and I am very excited to expand/contract my horizons with some of my old glass!

At this point, all I have to add is that anyone considering the jump as I was - GO FOR IT! It has been one of the most, if not THEE most satisfying camera purchase I have ever made... no regrets at all!

Hopefully, I can have some samples after this weekend!

Regards,
